Masseter hypertrophy is a common development deformity in plastic surgery practice especially in oriental contries. Masseter hypertrophy is usually treated by surgical procedures. But partial muscle excision may cause such complications as nerve damages, haemorrhage and hematoma, infections, scar, asymmetry, et al. On the other hand, the excised mass can not be accurately prequantified in operation. And we can not prognosticate how much of the remainder masseter muscle will atrophy after excision procedures. For preventing the complications and avoidance of surgical damage, some no surgical methods have been tried for the treatment of benign masseter hypertrophy. Since 1994, doctors have been tried to treat masseter hypertrophy with botulinum toxin and gained satisfying results. In 2000, this method was introduced to China to cure hypertrophied muscle disorders such as masseter and gastrocnemius hypertrophy and gained well-pleasing results too. However, we have always been devoting our minds to clinical observations and to some extent neglecting the histological alterations of the treated masseter.
