Objective: Malignant tumor is one of commonly and frequently encountered diseases threatening the human health seriously. Chemotherapy play an important role in the treatment of anti-tumor, however commonly used chemotherapeutics have no ideal curative effect on solid tumor, exist severe side effects and bring about multidrug resistance easily. So it is becoming an important strategy to develop new drugs of anti-tumor through obtaining active components from native materials. There are abundant medicinal plant resources in our country, it has an obvious ascendancy to research active components of anti-tumor from Chinese traditional and herbal drugs.Cortex Periplocae is the dry root bark of Periploca sepium Bge. belong to Asclepiadaceae plant. Its traditional function include eliminating wind and strengthening bones and muscles. Many chemical compositions were found in Cortex Periplocae in the past few years, it included steride, cardiac glycosides, terpenes and so on, and has lots of pharmacologic action such as anti-inflammatory, cardiac, antiradiation et al. At present, there is no relative detailed report about anti-tumor effect of Cortex Periplocae all over the world. An obvious activity to inhibit tumor growth was found in Cortex Periplocae crude extract when we detected anti-tumor Chinese medicinal materials. Then the active components were isolated and elucidated in order to further develop natural anti-tumor drug. The generation of tumor is a multi-procedured and complicated process. The infinite proliferation of cells caused by cell cycle regulated disorder and apoptosis inhibited are the foundation of tumour generation, and have a closely relationship with tumour development and prognosis. So the study on cell cycle, apoptosis and related genes are becoming two principal aspects to explore the mechanism of anti-tumor.
