Objectives: (1) To describe residents' morbidity and distribution. (2) To describe residents' perceptions of the causes, frequency, categorization, severity, susceptibility and vulnerability of diarrhea diseases, particularly in relation to Shigella dysentery. To describe community people's knowledge, attitude and practices relating to preventive and curative care of Shigella dysentery in general, and patients and their families'health care seeking practices in particular. (3) To further explore community people'spotential demands, acceptability and accessibility of using a Shigella dysenteryvaccine in the future; To analyze social, culture and behavior factors influencing health care seeking practices and access to the various components of health system. (4) To compare with the results agreement between Qualitative Study and Quantitative Study. (5) To compare with the results agreement in the six countries. (6) To explore whether the PMT (Protection Motivation Theory) can explain the acceptability of vaccine. (7) To draw conclusions and make strategies and policy recommendations for implementing Shigella dysentery vaccine program in similar rural China in the future.Methodologies: (1) To establish surveillance system of Shigella dysentery. (2) Methods of survey: semi-structured interview Qualitative Study and household Quantitative Study using structured questionnaire. (3) Methods of analysis: using the employing category analysis in Qualitative Study and to study people's acceptability of vaccine and cross comparison and multiple factor analysis method in Quantitative Study on people's perceptions of Shigella dysentery and acceptability of vaccine.Main Results: (1) PMT (Protection Motivation Theory) offers a reasonable albeit imperfect model on which to develop an understanding of vaccine acceptance; But it must plus the Modifying factors. (2) Most of residents are willing to the possibility of a vaccine to prevent dysentery, especially to children. And the acceptability rate reaches to over 90%.
