This study aims at the Pharmacognostical study on Hypericum sampsonii such as the botanical resource distribution, microscopic characteristics of Pollen grains and seeds, chemical constituents isolation, identification, quantitative analysis and biological activity. Ten compounds were isolated from H. sampsonii, and their structures were elucidated on the basic of spectroscopic analysis, eight of which were obtained from H. sampsonii for the first time. An extract contains 68.3% total flavonoids of H. sampsonii was found effective in reducing immobile time upon Forced Swimming Test in mouse. It indicated that total flavonoids were the main possible antidepressant active components. The isolated ten compounds and four extracts from H. sampsonii were tested for proliferation of AD 293 (renal carcinoma cell line) and the dichloromethane extract was found effective in inhibiting proliferation.
