A study on the relationship between anti-diuretic hormone secretion thirst and plasma osmolality in diabeticsGu Ming-jin, Liu zhi-min, Wu Wen-ya, et-al (Changzheng Hospital, the Second Militarry Medical University. Shanghai 200003)AbstractThe Changes of the plasma osmolality ,plasma anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) and thirst scale immediatelybefore and after a 2-h intravenous infusion (0. 06ml kg Ymin) of 5 sodium chloride in 6 healthy volunteers and 6 diabetics with the symptom of thirsty and 6 diabetics without thirsty were reported . The plasma ADH level were determined by radioimmunoassay . Thirsty intensity was estimated by means of a linear visual analogue scale . Results showed that infusion of hypertonic saline caused rising in plasma sodium and osmolality together with increasing in thirst perception and in healthy control and in plasma ADH in all three groups . but the level of plasma ADH was lower in the two diabetic groups than in heathy control and the scale of thirst was lower in diabetics without thirst than in those with thirst and healthy control . these observations suggest that diabetics without or with thirst have low ADH reserve and diabetics without thirst have thirst perception defect .
