Subtropical region in Southern China has special physical and agricultural conditions where agro-ecosystem and its spatial pattern were restricted by ecological characteristics of zonal vegetation. The first part of this study conduct ecological-economic regionalization focused respectively on the whole subtropical region in Southern China, east-subtropical region, west-subtropical region and the three-gorge region, designed optimal agro-ecological landscape patterns in different geographic units, which aimed to make up the break-up and unbalance of bio-geo-chemical cycle due to simplicity of agro-ecosystem structure. The second part of the study developed a ecological-agricultural model of Yichang county(east part of Huangbaihe watershed), which traded off between soil erosion/conservation and utility of natural resources. The study provideed a example of sustainable agriculture and ecological security in the three-gorge region, which included theoretical principles and technological approaches based on GIS and remote sensing techniques, landscape planning and ecosystem management theories.Artificial grassland in mid-mountainous area is a new ecological-economic belt in subtropical mountainous region and its significant is not only lies in a high profit industry, but also in its theoretical value in vegetation ecology. The third part of this study concentrated on community and landscape study of grassland ecological-economic belt: 1)An integrated analysis on community structure and spatial pattern as well as its relationship with environmental factors, disturbance and different management measurements. 2)Spatial trend surface analysis of grassland species and the reason of community organization. 3)Spatial heterogeneity and auto-correlation study of grassland landscape under grazing and mowing conditions.
