The safety and protection of water-source regions have become more and more important recently. Many water diversion projects have been implemented all around the country. According to this background, the water-source region for water diversion from Yangtze River to Lake Tai is selected to perform the comprehensive research on the water-source area protection and safety considering the water quantity and quality, local economic development level, river regime, water front, river bed stability, flow velocity field and sediment discharge. The research provides the technical and scientific support for the studies of water-source region protection and safety argument.Water environment condition is analyzed for the study area. The results show that the water quality in the water-source region is far worse than that in Yangtze River. It can be seen that the water quality in the water-source region is severely polluted. Using observed water quality data in years of 2003 and 2004, the contamination status induced by industrial pollution sources which located within 5 km of studied water-source region and Yangtze River as well as its branches is calculated. The results also proved that the water contamination of the studied water-source region is serious. Through single-factor evaluation method, water quality of monitor sections along those branches all show inferior V class. The behavior of discharge sewage exceeding standard is urgency to be controlled. Analyzing the monthly water quality data of the water-source region, the water quality during the non-flood season is better than that during the flood season. This indicates that one of main pollution sources of water-source region is non-point source pollution inshore.Based on the analysis of water quality condition in the studied area, we can draw a conclusion that the point source and non-point source pollution inshore are the main factors that deteriorated water quality in the water-source region.
