It is important to quantitatively analyze and effectively describe the structural condition of rock mass. It is an effective way for determining the mechanical, hydraulic and engineering characteristic of rock mass. The study of the 3-D simulation of rock mass joints and the application based on the 3-D simulation of rock mass joints is reviewed in detail. The paper base on the site investigation of Beishan Area, Gansu province, the preselected area of Chinese High Level Radioactive Waste. Followed the route from investigation of rock mass joints to the 3-D simulation of rock mass joints and from 3-D simulation of rock mass joints to permeability analysis, the 3-D simulation of rock mass joints and permeability of rock mass is studied.A great deal of joint data is obtained from joint survey in the vicinity of BS01, BS03 borehole and Jiji quarry of Beishan Area, Gansu province and from the borehole core log and acoustic borehole televiewer survey of BS01, BS03 borehole.The probability analysis of joint geometry characteristic is advanced. The scanline method of mean trace length estimation method is extended. The joint data of one or more outcrops in the same homogenous area mustn't be divided into sets and the total joint data can be used to estimate the mean trace length by the extended scanline method. The computer program for estimating the mean trace length and mean trace midpoint density is developed according to the theory of circular window method. The mean trace length and trace midpoint density for each circular sampling window of different position and radius is calculated. The diversity of them is analyzed, so the suitable mean trace length and trace midpoint of each outcrop can be determined. According to one-to-one correspondence of joint trace and joint disc, the relationship of trace midpoint area density and the joint volume density is obtained.
