Accompanying with the continuous development of the national scientificresearch in Antarctica, the construction of scientific research stations, the logisticbase for scientific researches, has been one of the important aspects of the explorationof China in the polar region. Among the questions of the construction of scientificresearch stations, the current research on ecological building is inadequate, comparedwith the rapid extension of scale and functions. This hampers not only thearchitecture level of national scientific research stations, but also the scientificresearch activities. This dissertation focused on the discovery of the ecologicaldemands of the scientific research stations in Antarctica, and attempted to respondthem by the adaptation of the current theories and technique on ecological building. In the foreword, the dissertation presented the necessity of the ecologicalstrategy of Architecture design in the construction activities in Antarctica, based onthe analysis of the environment factors in polar region and the actualities in thescientific research stations. In the part of Background and Theoretical Preparation, the dissertation indicatedthat the simple application of the current theories on ecological building is notfeasible for the constructions of scientific research stations in polar region.Furthermore, a theoretical frame for Ecological Building in Antarctica wasestablished, based on the analysis of local situations.According to the above theoretical frame, the part of Ecological Strategy ofArchitecture Design made a systematical discussion on the questions of constructionsin polar region from the viewpoints of architecture design and the application oftechnique. A comprehensive, applicable and operable ecological strategy ofarchitecture design was put forward in the following part. It is not only the suggestionon the architecture design of scientific research stations, but also a tentativeperspective about the future development of architecture in Antarctica. The part of Design and Estimation consisted of the following two sections. First,it presented the project of the extension and rebuilding design for Zhongshan Station, which could be deemed as the application and explanation of the EcologicalStrategies of Design presented. Second, a qualitative estimation was performed byusing relative evaluation methods for ecological building, which fed back andpolished the conclusions put forward in the former text. The outcomes of the research will be significant for the construction activities inAntarctica. As the exploration in a new field, this research will also be contributivefor the extension of the theory of Ecological Building.
