Passively controlled anti-rolling tank is one of the most popular used stabilizing equipments. It fits for ships working at each speed. On the top of passive anti-rolling tank, air valves are installed that can be controlled by a little power in order to control the flow of water in the tank. We can deal with natural problem of passive anti-rolling tank by blocking the water in the upper tank. So high roll amplitudes are avoided in the non-resonance range. The paper is based on the item the anti-rolling tank test setup among the school 211 key construction projects. The control method and correlative theory of passively controlled anti-rolling tank are analyzed and further discussed. After synthesizing numerous related literatures and reference materials at home and abroad, the development of domestic and oversea anti-rolling tank is summarized. Hence, the studying direction of this paper is decided. The control equation of air valve is developed by analyzing power of air. The mathematical model of the ship-passively controlled anti-rolling tank system is set based on theories of U-type passive anti-rolling tank, which include air valves installed on two sides and one side. The academic bases of optimal control method are developed. We study time of opening air valve or closing air valve in detail. The choices of control method are key factors that influence stabilizer effect of passively controlled anti-rolling tank mainly, by comparing optimal control method with routine control method. Simulation results show that optimal control method is effective, which have more stabilizer ranges than routine control method, and that control effect of air valves on the top two sides tank is better than that on the top of one side tank.A detailed study has been made of the main problems of rolling test platform, including simulation wave disturbance of force/moment and attenuation force/ moment of damping. Moreover, the adjusting methods that include center of gravity and moment of inertia of rolling test platform are given. The DSP designis used toward passively controlled anti-rolling tank. And the choice of induction valves and designs of air system are introduced in detail. At last, the model test of passively controlled anti-rolling tank is done disturbed by regular wave adopting optimal control method. The test results of passively controlled anti-rolling tank are given. The successful development of rolling test platform provides a stabilized test bench for ship equipped with anti-rolling tank to predict roll motion accurately and reliably. The natural period by testing is accordance with theoretical result. The passively controlled anti-rolling tank can reduce roll amplitudes of rolling test platform in low frequency range, which has better stabilizer range than passive anti-rolling tank. Through model test, we can accord test data for equipping passively controlled anti-rolling tank in real ship.
