Agile manufacturing (AM) is one of the advanced manufacturing paradigms in 21'th century. As the bridge connecting design and manufacturing, computer-aided process planning (CAPP) is a key component in agile manufacturing information system (AMIS). Because of the reason that more attention has been given to the research of process schedule auto-generating, and the adaptability, Reconfiguration, Reusability and Scalability (RRS) of CAPP have been ignored during a long time, the traditional CAPP can't give more help to enterprise for responding to market requirement quickly in agile environment. So, aimed at characters of AM, studying and implementing an agile CAPP (ACAPP) system, which can rapidly adapt to the requirements of enterprises are of great importance in theory and practice.According to the analysis of the requirements, concept and technical characters of ACAPP, some fundamental issues and key technologies of ACAPP are researched in this paper, such as system architecture, the information models of sub-systems, process planning decision-making model (PPDM), the share and discovering method of process knowledge, cooperate process designing (CPD) and software implementing technologies. Based on the theoretical study mentioned above, a softweare prototype (SCU-CAPPTool) of agile CAPP system based on intelligent middleware is developed. The main achievements and creative ideas of the paper are as follows:(1) Based on the discussion of the characteristics of 21'th manufacturing and the implication of manufacturing information, the elements of MIS, the position and function of CAPP in MIS are provided. The RRS strategy of AM and the construction technology of AMS were analyzed. After description of the defects of traditional CAPP, the study of situation and future of CAPP, it is pointed out that agile CAPP supporting AM is a new study tendency.(2) Agile idea is introduced into CAPP, the concept of agile CAPP, which isThe research work is supported by the project of National 863 Hi-Tech Plan/QMS Application Engineering under Grants No. 200IAA411150.A PhD Dissertation of Sichun Universityproduct-oriented, database-based and supports concurrent and cooperative designing, is put forward. The function model and software methodology are analyzed and built. The system architecture of ACAPP system, which composed of three function layers such as CAPP main body, agent layer and enterprise environment is provided, and the agility of this system is analyzed.(3) Based on analyzing the characters of manufacturing process resources, a unified data model based on knowledge element (KE) is provided. The integrated product model is given also. Feature-based part model is discussed, and the representation based on KE is given. The process procedure model and process procedure format model are analyzed and defined. A unified manufacturing process resource model based on abstract resource factory pattern is defined also.(4) The process decision-making model (PDMM) is a key problem in the study of CAPP tools and limited the intelligent and practice of CAPP. According to analyzing the situation of PDMM, the muti-mode PDMM of ACAPP that composed of Case Based Reasoning (CBR), interactive design and other decision method is produced. The formal description of hierarchy case-based process model, which composed basic process procedure (PP) element, PP element (PPE), process templet and process procedure case, is given. The implementing method of ACAPP PDMM based on mobile agent (MA) is also studied.(5) ACAPP is a knowledge-based intelligent system. The technology of knowledge share and acquiring is one of the enabler of ACAPP. After study the mechanism of global share and management of process knowledge, a kind of process knowledge share model based on ontology is brought forward. A text-clustering based process knowledge acquiring method is provided.(6) The process planning design procedure is a concurrent procedure with many people involved.
