The market competition is very fierce all over the world. This challenges the manufacturing and brings the chances to it. As soul of manufacturing,modern design theory is used to promote the products' ability of competing. The researchers have being studied it for a long time and got many progresses. Brilliant achievements of research on math,computer science and physiology are gained. Modern design theory will obtain great profits form combining these progresses.This dissertation is divided into two main parts. First,a summary of the most recently progresses gained in modern design are presented. Ten characteristics of modern design are pointed out. In addition,some new concepts related to modern design are put forward. These new concepts are employed to instruct and evaluate the product design. Secondly,some new concurrent design methods are developed by using the theory of artificial neural network(ANN),genetic algorithm(GA). The test for an actual example is described also.The main contents of this dissertation are as following:In Chapter 1,the background,source,purpose and significance of the subject are introduced. An outline on modern design is presented in this chapter. Based on the summarization,ten properties of modern design theory are obtained.In Chapter 2,the process of product design is analyzed in detail. First,concurrent design mode is presented. In this new design mode,three new concepts,product design stream,milestone of product design and design efficiency,are promoted. Secondly,as one of the essential technologies in concurrent design,concurrent optimum design technology is discussed. At last,an integrated environment of artificial optimum design orient to product is constructed.In Chapter 3,a concurrent structure optimum design technique is researched. The theory of ANN is helpful in this study. The methods of finite element analysis and optimum design are blent in well. As applications of this new strategy,some examples are examined.In Chapter 4,some new optimum strategies are researched. Two new concepts,structure and process,are presented. Several new optimum design algorithms are developed based on the theory of ANN. These methods are different from the traditional techniques. They have their own characteristics,such as properties ofparallelism,intelligent and so on. They can be used to solve some problems that traditional optimum design methods are unavailable. Some examples are tested.In Chapter 5,a genetic optimum algorithm is developed. The thought of genetic algorithm plays an important role in the study. In addition,several examples are provided.In Chapter 6,engineering test is described. As an object for the application,die casting machine is introduced. Stress and displacement test is recorded. The result of the test proves the validity of the methods.At last,in Chapter 7,the conclusions of whole thesis are summed up,and the future research is proposed.
