With the emergence of modernism architecture, the focus of architectural design gradually shifts from the outside to the inside, from decoration-oriented to space-oriented, and with time, it undertakes a process of renovation and transformation. Along with the change in philosophical epistemology, varied thoughts and developmental modes of contemporary and modern architecture constantly enrich architectural theories, and at the same time generate various spatial morphology and spatial characteristics. The spontaneous revolution in architectural space inevitably leads to the fundamental changes in pedagogical theories of architectural education. After being liberated from the aegis of structure by modern architecture, space has turned from backstage into the spotlight, and gained a remarkable exaltation in its value. From then on, how to construct space and how to voice space by choosing appropriate language have become our top concern. At the same time, space-based teaching has become the hardcore of modern architectural education and an essential part of the curriculum of relevant disciplines such as environmental art design(including landscape design and interior design), urban planning, landscape design and stage, cinematic and TV art design, so much so that it has formed a close connection with other visual art and art design disciplines. Among the teaching activeties of space, project design and assignment arrangement are of primary importance.Originated in modern space theory which is still in progress, varied meaningful and practical spatial design training methods have become the focus of practical training and experimental exploration of many colleges and institutes in the past 100 years or so. Through a hundred years’ accumulation, diversified pedagogical genres and the rich curriculum of architecture colleges and departments have gained rich experience in many aspects such as training methods, content and resources of projects and assignments, methods and procedures in teaching, media and form, expression and effects, and so on. However, problems concerning research and teaching orientation still exist.Under such circumstances, guided by historical materialism, rooted in the development of a century’s philosophical thoughts and led by modern architectural theory and pedagogy, this dissertation carries out a series of research on modern western elementary spatial design projects and assignment arrangements, with an aim to explore and analyze their theoretical basis and design methods, and moreover, to reveal their experimental models, their leads in design, and academic hue in operational techniques. The whole endeavor not only can be treated as a response to reflection, problems and experience, but also a summary of project design of modern spatial pedagogy which doubtlessly will attain a sustainable self-motivating force. This dissertation which in turn covers the following six subjects: the philosophical background of the origin and development of modern architecture(space), the development of modern architectural(spatial)theories, the practice and exploration of modern architecture(space), modern architectural pedagogy under the influence of modern architectural(spatial) theories, systematic research on contemporary“spatial” projects and reflection on contemporary “spatial” project design.
