From "Chinese Style" To "Chinese Way"

China’s creation culture has gone through thousands of years of Cultural Revolution and formed a unique national characteristic, and the included functions, forms and materials all show the outstanding creativity and brilliant achievements. “Chinese Method” has become the hottest topic of design nowadays, and designs of cultural products that can carry and reflect the profound traditional Chinese culture and values are frequently appearing in various major exhibitions and academic researches, which not only help China draw more and more attention from the international culture, but also forcefully conveys China’s thinking of its culture as well as the openness of China’s contemporary culture in the context of multiple culture. However, in recent years, due to the strong impact of Western ideas, as well as the flux and reflux of Western design theory trends, China’s fast-growing design industry extremely lacks of ability and method to carry out in-depth exploration and scientific research of Chinese method design, resulting in many problems, Chinese method design is trapped. The research on China’s traditional cultural mode in this paper focuses on the implementation of specific case. It proposes thinking and suggests redesigning current modern Chinese cultural products that have considerable market prospect. First of all, this paper begins with interpretation of relevant cultural concepts of “Chinese Method”, and then it starts from the comparison of Eastern and Western view of traditional creation, exploring the relationship between lifestyle and design style. Then it refines the characteristics of traditional Chinese lifestyle from modes of aesthetic appreciation and expression, ethics, materials, use and social lifestyle, so as to clear the Chinese Method’s concept, framework and perspective of thinking at the level of design thinking. Finally, based on my practice research on Chinese method design since 2009, I sum up the artistic language and way of Chinese method used in the design of modern products, committed to finding an effective Chinese method creation theory for now and future, being taken as a translation channel of the inheritance of traditional Chinese culture to modern culture.
