A Preliminary Study On Results-oriented Systems Engineering(ROSE): Methodology & Applications

With the rapid economic development,engineering activities spread like a fire nowadays in China.However,Systems Engineering has not kept pace with the engineering construction tide and can't fulfill the needs of the engineering times.In view of this,the dissertation introspects the theory system of Systems Engineering, reveals the non-equilibrium drawback of valuing system while belittling engineering, strives to reinforce its engineering facet,and mainly does some researches in the following aspects.(1) Duality of Systems Science and Systems EngineeringBased on the trialism of science,technology and engineering,the demarcation between Systems Science and Systems Engineering is presented.And it is claimed that the essence of Systems Science is law,while the essence of Systems Engineering is rule. They have different philosophy preset,logic process and thinking way.Thus,the equal footing of Systems Engineering and Systems Science is established,simultaneously,the argument foundation of Results-oriented Systems Engineering(ROSE) is laid.(2) ROSE methodologySituating ROSE in engineering category,its four principles,namely, results-oriented principle,lean-system principle,meta-integration principle and into-practice principle,is deduced.And the logical process of ROSE,the OPI process (output→process→input),which is placed into two-level morphology of system cognition and system practice,is proposed.It is indicated that system cognition mainly demands for systematic thinking while system practice demands more for engineering-thinking.(3) Categories system of ROSESince there is essential difference between Systems Science and Systems Engineering,the category system of the former should not simply be the succession of that of the latter.Thus,the categories system of ROSE is explored,which is classified into three:entity-category,process-category and feature-category,including value&results,opportunity-capturing&momentum-making,innovation&reuse,etc.(4) Practical rules of ROSEIn view of that practice precedes theory in engineering,16 practical rules of ROSE, such as boundary-limited rule and scheme-zero rule,is extracted. (5) The exploration of reverse system analysis in a way of from elements behavior to system structureSince ROSE is with an OPI process,to deduce the system overall structure with the results is one of the primary problems.By integrating Grey Relational Analysis(GRA) and Interpretative Structural Modeling(ISM),a quantitative method to get system structure by analyzing its elements behavior sequences(the results) is obtained.(6) The exploration of joint-part management in system integrationIn the OPI process of ROSE,system integration is another important activity following system analysis,and joint-part management is the key to system integration. The traits of the joint-part both as a system and a system of systems(SOS) are depicted. It is claimed that the joint-part should be treated as SOS rather than monolithic system. The unforeseen emergence as SOS is the origin of the complexity in joint-part management.And the joint-part can only be engineered by intervention and evolution, rather than by specification and then development.Therefore,the joint-part 3E×3P management matrix is created.In a word,ROSE is the derived class of Systems Engineering,aiming to apply the Systems Engineering theory in a more pragmatic and operable way.ROSE is not just a followership,but a developing attempt in Systems Engineering.
