Species of Prymnesiophyceae are major part of primary productivity of marine ecosystem, including species which can form large scale algal bloom as well as species which have already been the living food in juvenile breeding of aquaculture. Unfortunately, due to their tiny size and difficulty of isolation, they are scarcely studied in China. About 40 strains of prymnesiophyte were isolated from samples continously collected in the coastal areas of Shandong Province from 2000 to 2003. Taxonomy studies were conducted by observing cells under both light and electron microscope, and using different methods such as positive stain, negative stain, whole-mount shadow cast and ultrathin section. Altogether 22 species of Prymnesiophyceae were identified, namely 15 species of Chrysochromulina, 1 species of Corymbellus, 1 species of Gephyrocapsa, 1 species of Isochrysis, 1 species of Phaeocystis and 3 species of Prymnesium. One new record of genera, one new species and 16 new records of species are included. The species are listed as follows: Genus Chrysochromulina Lackey, 1939 C. planisquama sp. nov. C. ahrengotii Jensen et Moestrup, 1999 C. alifera Parke et Manton, 1956 C . apheles Moestrup et Thomsen, 1985 C. cymbium Leadbeater et Manton, 1969 C. hirta Manton, 1978 C. kappa Parke et Manton, 1955 C. leadbeateri Estep, Davis, Hargraves et Sieburth, 1984 C. megacylindra Leabeater, 1972 C. minor Parke et Manton, 1955 C. pringsheimii Parke et Manton, 1962 C. rotalis Eikrem et Throndsen, 1999 C. simplex Estep, Davis, Hargraves et Sieburth, 1984 C. strobilus Parke et Manton, 1959 C. ericina Parke et Manton, 1956 Genus Corymbellus Green, 1976 C. aureus Green, 1976 Genus Gephyrocapsa Kamptner, 1943 G. oceanica Kamptner,1943 Genus Isochrysis Parke, 1949 I. galbana Parke, 1949 Genus Phaeocystis Lagerheim, 1893 P. globosa Scherffel, 1899 Genus Prymnesium Massart ex Conrad, 1926 P. nemamethecum Pienaar et Birkhead, 1994 P. patellifera Green, Hibberd et Pienaar, 1982 P. parvum N. Carter emend. Green, Hibberd et Pienaar, 1982 On the basis of these studies, several comments were summarized:Isolation and culture are very important in taxonomy of Prymnesiophyceae.Flagella, haptonema as well as scales (coccolith) are major criteria for identifying Prynmesiophyceae species. Species of Prymnesiophyceae, especially species of Chrysochromulina, are abundant along the coast of Shandong Province,.
