Tourmaline, as a kind of mineral environment material, has spontaneous polarity at room temperature, so it has a great applied value in protecting environment and promoting people's health. Up to now, the spontaneous polarity has not been observed through direct method. In this thesis, the physical and chemical properties of tourmaline are studied in order to use it reasonably.The spontaneous polarity was firstly observed by electron-beam bombardment and scanning electron microscope (STM). The hit spot of elliptic shape appeared on crystal plane paralleling to c axis, and one half was brighter than the other half under SEM. The brighter part was the negative pole, and the darker one was the positive pole. The hit spot was round or circle on the crystal plane. Therefore, the intensity of spontaneous polarity and the direction of polarity could be judged by the shape of the electron-beam bombardment spot. The polarity disappeared at 950 C for 2h. It was found that the Schorl or dravite in schorl-dravite group that is produced from pegmatite and has good crystal degree had a strong intensity of spontaneous polarity by electron-beam bombardment and X-ray diffraction of varying the temperature.The electrode character of tourmaline particles influences the redox potential of water and regulates the pH value of solution to the weak alkali. The element sites on the surface of tourmaline powder play a bigger effect on acid solution than alkali solution. The powder of tourmaline could absorb formaldehyde and destroyed it with the surface electric field, which was studied by infrared ray diffuse reflection of FTIR. It was found the surface electric field could promote the producing of hydroxyl free radical of TiO2 by electron-spin resonance (ESR). In addition, the high infrared radiation is due to the existence of Si-O bond and O-B bond in tourmaline, which has nothing to do with the special structure of it.The powder of effectively inducing negative ions was prepared by adding rear earth oxide as dispersant in the tourmaline powder. A building coating was made from latex, the powder and other stuffings. The coating could effectively induce negative air ion through the water molecular colliding the tourmaline particle surface in the coating. An air ion tester monitored by computer was made, which could continuously test the change of air ion. The tester can be used to monitor the ability of inducing air ion of materials, such as powder, coating, ceramics and textile.The tourmaline with great spontaneous polarity can purify water and air. So it can be used in building decorating material, purifying water materials and cleaning air materials.
