ObjectiveTo explore whether the personality traits of nursing interns before clinical practice can predict their retention intention after 10 months of internship,and analyze the development track of personality traits,mental toughness and career choice during internship,in order to provide suggestions for nursing educators and managers to help nursing interns adapt to the impact of internship transition and improve their retention intention as soon as possible.MethodsThis study selected 2020-2022,Four third-class hospitals in Guangzhou of 351 nursing interns as the research object.Using the simplified version of the Big Five Personality Scale(NEO-FFI),the Retention Intention Scale(QNIRE),the simple psychological status assessment scale Kessler10 scale(K10)and the mental toughness scale(CD-RISC-10),nursing interns were treated with T0(before internship),T1(internship for 3 months)and T2(internship for 6 months).T3(10 months of practice)was measured at four time points.Latent variable profile analysis(LPA)was used to identify potential subgroups of personality traits of nursing interns before clinical practice.Using bayesian estimation equation to compare different personality subgroups in different phases of internship retention intention,emotional distress,mental toughness level;The general estimation equation was used to compare the development paths of retention intention,emotional distress and mental toughness of different personality subgroups.Logistic regression was used to evaluate the influence of different personality profiles on the retention intention of nursing interns after 10 months of practice.ResultsThe personality traits of nursing interns were divided into three subgroups: "over-sensitive type"(36.2%),"flexible adaptable type"(13.1%)and "ordinary type"(50.7%).The three profiles of personality traits had significant effect on the origin of nursing interns(P=0.018,P< 0.05).The retention intention of hypersensitive nursing interns had a significant change(χ2 =14.858,P =0.002).The retention intention was lowest in the week before and early of the internship,and highest in the late internship.The K10 development of flexible and adaptive nursing interns,hypersensitive nursing interns and ordinary nursing interns was stable(P=0.884,P=0.413,P=0.386,all P > 0.05).The K10 of hypersensitive nursing interns was the highest one week before and in the early stage of internship,and the K10 of ordinary nursing interns was the second.The K10 of flexible and adaptive nursing interns was the lowest;The K10 of hypersensitive nursing interns was still the highest in the middle and late stages of practice.The development of mental toughness of flexible and adaptive nursing interns,hypersensitive nursing interns and ordinary nursing interns was stable(P = 0.387,P = 0.139,P = 0.533,P > 0.05).The mental toughness of hypersensitive nursing interns was the highest one week before and in the early stage of internship,followed by that of ordinary nursing interns.Flexible nursing interns have the lowest mental toughness;In the middle and late internship,the mental toughness of hypersensitive nursing interns was still the highest.T0 psychological toughness and extraverted dimension had significant effects on the career choice of nursing students(P <0.05),while the other variables were not significant Conclusion The personality traits of nursing interns are heterogeneous.Among them,the retention intention of hypersensitive nursing interns during clinical practice has a significant increase trend,and the retention intention of flexible and ordinary interns is stable.The K10 of hypersensitive,flexible and ordinary interns was stable,and the K10 of hypersensitive nursing interns was the highest.The mental toughness of hypersensitive,flexible and ordinary interns is stable,and the mental toughness of hypersensitive nursing interns is the strongest.Managers should pay attention to hypersensitive interns.
