| Objective:This study investigated the clinical adjustment status and five-state personality traits of undergraduate nursing interns in a tertiary care hospital in Yunnan Province, explored the correlation between the five-state personality and clinical adjustment of the interns, and identified the factors influencing their clinical maladjustment and five-state personality traits;and interviewed the interns to understand the challenges they faced in clinical work and their experiences and strategies to cope with these challenges..Based on the findings,it is hoped that a more comprehensive understanding of intern nursing students’ adaptation in clinical work can be obtained, and targeted suggestions and guidance can be provided for the training and clinical practice of intern nursing students. Methods:Using the Maladjustment in Clinical Practice Scale for Nursing Students and the Five-State Personality Inventory(Adult Brief Version),228 undergraduate nursing students in 2021 internships in six tertiary care hospitals in Kunming were selected by convenience sampling method. The results of the survey were statistically analysed using the SPSS 24.0 analysis tool, and the internship nursing students’ maladjustment and pentadic personality traits were evaluated by means of descriptive and difference analyses;the correlation between their maladjustment and pentadic personality was analysed with the help of Spearman’s correlation analysis;the artificial neural network method was used to analyse the main personality traits affecting the internship nursing students’ clinical adaptation traits;a qualitative study using phenomenological research methods, where the researcher used semi-structured interviews to conduct in-depth interviews after obtaining informed consent from the respondents, and used the Colaizzi seven-step analysis method to analyse and summarise the data to arrive at the final themes.Based on the findings and related analyses, countermeasures were proposed to influence the factors of clinical maladjustment among trainee nurses.Results:1 Among the 228 undergraduate nursing students investigated,97(42.54%)had good adaptation,103(45.18%)had mild adaptation, and 28(12.28%)had moderate and severe adaptation. There were significant differences in student origin, the main reasons of college entrance examination and the satisfaction degree of nursing work(p < 0.05).2 Among the five-state personality types of undergraduate nursing students,Taiyin type accounted for the most(70)and Yin/Yang calm type accounted for the least(32);18(52.94%)of male students were Yang-oriented and 98(50.52%)of female students were Yin-oriented3 Correlation analysis showed that the five-state personality traits were correlated with undergraduate nursing student internship adaptability, and Taiyin personality was negatively correlated with the four dimensions of adaptability(P<0.001);Shaoyang personality and Yin-Yang calm personality were positively correlated with the four dimensions of adaptability(P<0.05).4 Artificial neural networks revealed that five-state personality traits influence undergraduate nursing students’ internship adjustment. In particular, the Taiyin personality type had a closer influence on the four dimensions of internship adjustment: interpersonal and social, internship behavioural performance, professional cognition and professional affect, and emotion.5 In-depth personal interviews were conducted on 15 cases of qualitative research. The interview results were summarized and integrated into the clinical adaptation of undergraduate nursing students by using the Colaizzi seven-step data analysis method in phenomenological research: There are four topics: the influence of nursing students’ personality characteristics on their work performance, their subjective experience and cognition of the work environment, the ways to deal with maladjustment during clinical practice, and the feedback of nursing students on pre-service training and situational exercise.Conclusion:1 The overall adaptability of undergraduate nursing students in clinical practice was at the middle level, and the male students were mainly positive, while the female students were mainly negative.2 Five-state personality traits affect nursing students’ internship adaptation, especially Taiyin personality has a greater impact on nursing students’ clinical adaptation. This is mainly reflected in the influence of Taiyin personality through four aspects: interpersonal and social relationships, internship behavioral performance, professional cognition and professional emotions, and emotions, which in turn affect the clinical adaptation of undergraduate internship nursing students.3 Based on the results of this survey, combined with the interview results, the recommendations for improving clinical adaptation guidance for undergraduate intern nursing students that can be referred to are focused on improving intern nursing students’ personality tendencies, strengthening and optimizing pre-service training, paying attention to nursing students’ emotional problems during internship, and improving the quality of on-campus nursing humanities courses. |
