Objectives:The purpose of this study is to develop a set of nursing informatics competency scale for undergraduate nursing students that is suitable for China’s national conditions and new medical science background,so as to provide a quantitative tool for evaluating the nursing informatics competency of undergraduate nursing students.Questionnaires were utilized to investigate and analyze the existing state of nursing informatics competency among undergraduate nursing students,as well as the factors that influence it,in order to provide a practical basis for the cultivation and evaluation of nursing informatics competency for undergraduate nursing students,which in turn promoted the development of undergraduate nursing informatics in China.Methods:1.This study initially constructed a framework of indicators for nursing informatics competency of undergraduate nursing students through a literature review and semi-structured interviews.Based on this framework,the indicator system for nursing informatics competency of undergraduate nursing students was established after modification through two rounds of Delphi expert consultation.Eleven experts were selected in the first round and twelve experts were selected in the second round to propose modifications mainly from the scale structure,index content,textual expressions,etc.The index weights were established by using hierarchical analysis to form a nursing informatics competency evaluation index system for undergraduate nursing students,and then to form a nursing informatics competency scale for undergraduate nursing students(pre-test version).2.Using the convenience sampling method,228 undergraduate nursing students were pre-investigated using the nursing informatics competency scale for undergraduate nursing students(pre-test version).Finally,the nursing informatics competency scale for undergraduate nursing students(official version)was formed through item analysis and reliability and validity tests.3.A convenience sample of 397 undergraduate nursing students was surveyed using the nursing informatics competency scale for undergraduate nursing students(official version)to understand their current status and analyze the influencing factors.Results:1.A nursing informatics competency index system for undergraduate students was developed,which includes 5 primary indicators,10 secondary indicators,and 37 tertiary indicators.Meanwhile,the weights of the primary,secondary,and tertiary indicators were determined separately,and a consistency check was performed to confirm the rationality of the weightings.2.Initially,5 dimensions(basic computer competency,information knowledge and skills,information management competency,information law and safety,and information attitude)and 37 items of the nursing informatics competency scale for undergraduate nursing students(pre-test version)were developed.3.After using item analysis and exploratory factor analysis methods and combining expertise to eliminate one item,five factors with characteristic roots >1 were obtained,with a cumulative variance contribution rate of 79.949%.The scale exhibited a high level of internal consistency,with a total Cronbach’s α coefficient of 0.973 andα coefficients for each dimension ranging from 0.902 to 0.942.The scale also demonstrated good reliability,with a fold-half reliability coefficient of 0.901 and a retest reliability coefficient of 0.822;the S-CVI of the scale was 0.96,and the I-CVI ranged from 0.80 to 1.00.It has good reliability and validity.Finally,5 dimensions(basic computer competency,information knowledge and skills,information management competency,information law and safety,and information attitude)and 36 items of the nursing informatics competency scale for undergraduate nursing students were developed.4.The survey of 397 full-time undergraduate nursing students enrolled in nursing informatics competency showed a mean total score of(132.43±21.30)and a mean item score of(3.75±0.56),which is at the upper middle level.Regression analysis showed that participation in clinical internships or novitiates,research experience,knowledge of informatics nurses,the study of nursing informatics,and interest in computer information technology were relevant influencing factors.Conclusions:The nursing informatics competency scale for undergraduate nursing students developed in this study consists of 36 items across 5 dimensions and has been shown to have good reliability and validity.This scale provides an objective and reliable tool for measuring the nursing informatics competency of undergraduate nursing students in China,as well as an orientation and basis for the cultivation and enhancement of nursing informatics competency for undergraduate nursing students.This scale was used to investigate undergraduate nursing students.The results showed that the nursing informatics competency should be further improved.The score of information attitude dimension was the highest,and the score of nursing information management competency dimension was the lowest.Nursing informatics competency is related to clinical practice or internship,scientific research experience,understanding of informatics nurses,learning nursing informatics,and interest in computer information technology.
