The Verification Of The Integrated Motivational-Volitional Model Of Suicidal Behavior Among Undergraduate Students In China

In the framework of the ideation-to-action framework,the integrated motivationalvolitional model of suicidal behavior will be tested in a sample of Chinese college students.Study 1 examined the central pathways from defeat to entrapment,from entrapment to suicidal ideation,and from suicidal ideation to suicidal attempt behavior within the framework of the integrated motivational-volitional model of suicidal behavior.Study 2 focused on the motivational phase of the integrated motivationalvolitional model of suicidal behavior,and examined the mediating role of entrapment in defeat and suicidal ideation,as well as the moderating role of thwarted belongingness,perceived burdensomeness on the mediating pathway of defeat-entrapment-suicidal ideation.Study 3 focused on the volitional phase of the integrated motivationalvolitional model of suicidal behavior,and examined the moderating effect of fearlessness of death on the relationship between suicidal ideation and suicide attempt.Investigation was conducted among 1458 college students in Tianjin by using the interpersonal needs questionnaire,defeat scale,entrapment scale,acquired capability for suicide scale—fearlessness about death,Beck suicide ideation scale,and the suicide attempt scale.SPSS24.0 and Mplus7.4 were used for data processing and statistical analysis.The results of this study show that:1.There were significant positive correlations between defeat,entrapment,suicidal ideation and suicide attempt.2.Defeat can influence suicide attempt behavior through the mediating effect of suicidal ideation,and the chain mediating role of entrapment and suicidal ideation,respectively.3.Defeat was a mediator variable between defeat and suicidal ideation.4.Thwarted belongingness,perceived burdensomeness moderated this mediation effect of entrapment.5.Fearlessness of death moderated the relationship between suicidal ideation and suicide attempts.In conclusion,the integrated motivational-volitional model of suicidal behavior has been initially verified among the sample of college students in China,which deepens the understanding of the mechanism of suicidal behavior,enriches the existing suicide theories in China and provides some reference for college students’ suicide intervention work.
