National image is the visual representation of a country's soft power.Visual rhetoric is of great theoretical and practical significance in shaping the national image.This paper selects more than 800 cover pictures of people's pictorial from 1950 to2016 as the research text,and investigates the shaping of China's national image by pictorial cover pictures in different periods from the perspective of visual rhetoric theory.It mainly focuses on what is the image of China presented by visual rhetoric,what context is based on,and what strategies are used,What kind of effect has it produced and what kind of guiding significance it has for the pictorial picture production in the new era to shape the national image.The first part of this paper shows the visual presentation of the national image on the cover of people's pictorial from 1950 to 2016;The second part analyzes the visual rhetoric context of people's pictorial;The third part focuses on the visual rhetoric strategy of the cover of people's pictorial by content analysis and case analysis;The fourth part summarizes and evaluates the role and significance of visual rhetoric in the cover of people's pictorial in shaping the national image from three aspects of politics,culture and art;In the fifth part,based on the above research conclusions and the opportunities and challenges faced by the people's pictorial in the new era,the author puts forward some inspirations for the visual rhetoric to shape the national image.This study argues that in the context of three major visual rhetorical contexts: the need to present the purport of national image construction,the significance of the cover pictures in the era of visual turn,and the multiple aesthetic tastes under viewing,the people's pictorial mainly uses Chinese style,landscape style,historical style,and aesthetic style The four international rhetorical strategies have created four national images of China,namely "new China on its feet","revolutionary red ocean","confident China on its feet" and "open China on its feet",which are closely linked with the development of history All kinds of image fragments in the process of external communication have been constructed in a unified form,which makes China's national image constantly perceived,established,recognized and even actively shared by domestic and foreign audiences.Facing the challenges and opportunities of the new era,the people's pictorial needs to further anchor the meaning of pictures in the construction and production of visual context;In the production and communication form of cover image content,we should continue to dig,enrich and innovate,in order to recreate the interesting visual landscape;In terms of other interaction,non-governmental subjects should be encouraged to consume,participate in and recreate their own culture by establishing new media platforms,carrying out international topic discussions and photo exhibitions,so as to enhance the acceptance and recognition of pictorial among different audiences.The author believes that through the above three aspects of visual rhetoric,pictorial will be more helpful to build a diversified audio-visual new discourse of images,words,data,audio and video,and create a clear national image in the new era,so as to achieve the "commonality" of global audience decoding and the "Empathy" of communication,Enhance the recognition of China's image on the world stage.
