| Objectives In this study,a questionnaire survey was conducted in adolescent patients receiving invisible orthodontic therapy, and adolescent patients receiving fixed orthodontic therapy and adult patients receiving invisible orthodontic therapy were also included as control,to explore:(1)the cognition and satisfaction of adolescent on invisible orthodontic therapy and related influencing factors;(2)the influence of patients’ gender, age, family income and other factors on choose decision of invisible orthodontic therapy vs traditional fixed treatment in adolescent patients,as well as the difference of cognition and satisfaction between invisible orthodontic therapy and traditional fixed treatment in adolescent patients;(3)the difference of cognition and satisfaction with invisible orthodontic therapy between adolescent and adult patients. The results of this study will provide valuable data on choose decision between invisible orthodontic and traditional fixed orthodontic treatments for both clinicians and adolescent patients,to get to know the difference of application of invisible orthodontic treatment in adolescent and adult patients,to facilitate malocclusion treatment in adolescent patients, improve the treatment effect, comfort and satisfaction of patients. Methods A total of 386 patients receiving malocclusion treatment in department of orthodontics of Bochuang Stomatological Hospital of North China University of Science and Technology in 2020 were selected.According to the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria,334 patients were included in the survey and 322 questionnaires were collected.According to the exclusion criteria,301 questionnaires were valid for survey analysis. The survey include a total of 33 questions,7 questions on basic data of patients(including gender, age, orthodontic appliances, place of residence, education background, family income and if the only child in family),6 cognition questions on treatment(including the cost,follow-up time, choose of orthodontic appliances, patient compliance, treatment purpose, person affecting treatment choose decision),and 20 questions on satisfaction with the treatment relating to patient aesthetic appearance, oral function, oral hygiene and painful experience,to evaluate the cognition and satisfaction of adolescent on invisible orthodontic treatment and its differences with traditional fixed treatment and adut patients receiving invisible orthodontic treatment. Results 1 Regarding the cognition of the treatment, the main1 reason for adolescent to reject fixed orthodontic treatment was due to inconvenience for oral hygiene(32.86%)and bad aesthetics(27.14%),whereas therapeutic effect was the last one(5.71%);the main reason to choose invisible orthodontic treatment was due to aesthetic effect(62.86%);parent’s opinion(58.57%)affected the treatment choose decision and only 41.43% of the adolescent determined by themselves. The degree of cognition of adolescent on treatment cost,follow-up time and treatment compliance were 90%,100% and 78.57%,respectively,and the whole degree of cognition was 89.52%.Regarding the satisfaction of the treatment, the degree of satisfaction of adolescent on aesthetic appearance, oral function, oral hygiene and painful experience were 82%,84%,65.14% and 78.85%,respectively,and the whole degree of satisfaction was 77.5%.2 In adolescent patients, the age, gender, family income and educational background showed no significant influence on treatment choose decision between invisible orthodontic treatment and fixed orthodontic treatment(P> 0.05).The cognition of treatment compliance of adolescent patients to invisible orthodontic treatment was significantly higher than that to fixed orthodontic treatment(P<0.05),whereas treatment cost and follow-up time showed no significant difference(P>0.05).Regarding satisfaction factors, adolescent were more satisfied with less injury to oral mucosa and less gingival swelling and pain in invisible orthodontic treatment when comparing to those in fixed orthodontic treatment(P<0.05),although other factors showed similar results(P >0.05).3 Adolescent showed higher cognition on follow-up time(P<0.05)and were more satisfied with less pain experience(P<0.05)in invisible orthodontic treatment when compared with adult controls, while they shared similar cognition on treatment cost and treatment compliance with their adult controls(P > 0.05),and other satisfaction parameters were also similar(P>0.05).Conclusions(1)Factors such as age, gender, family income and educational background have no influence on the choice of orthodontic appliance for adolescent patients;(2)Adolescents’ cognition of the cost of treatment and the time of return visit for invisible and fixed orthodontic treatment was not different.Adults’ satisfaction with compliance, mucosal damage, and sore gums during the treatment were more favorably treated with invisible treatment than with fixed treatment. We can recommend the use of invisible orthodontics in adolescent patients when both orthodontic methods can achieve the orthodontic goal.(3)The results of this study suggest that the advantages of invisible orthodontic treatment for adults are also found in adolescents, who have higher awareness of the time of return visit and satisfaction with pain than adults.Figure6;Table15;Reference 94... |
