The Ability Of Facial Expression Recognition And Deception Detection In Depressive Patients

Objective: To investigate the relationship between facial expression(including macro-expression and micro-expression)recognition ability and deception detection ability,to analyze whether there is a significant difference in deception detection ability and facial expression recognition ability between depressed patients and matched normal controls,and study the effect of depression degree on facial expression recognition ability and deception detection ability.Methods: depressed patients(N=51)(according to the ICD-11)with“the Chinese version of Beck Depression Inventory-II,BDI-II” score is greater than 13 points,and normal controls(N=58),matched by age,gender and education year with the BDI-II score is less than 14 points.All subjects are right-handed,have normal and corrected vision,and can operate a computer.The experiment is a mixed experimental design of 3(macro expressions: fear,happiness,expressionless)* 4(micro expressions: fear,happiness,expressionless,other expression)* 2(deception detection: honesty,deception),The experimental program is divided into four parts,namely macro expression recognition,dynamic micro expression recognition,the picture of static micro expression of peak frame recognition,and deception detection.The first part of the experiment is the macro expression recognition test;among them,there are 36 macro-expression pictures,12 pictures each of fear,happiness and expressionless.Then the subject will recognize the dynamic micro-expression video,there is 12 videos of dynamic micro expressions(each video last for 12 s and there is no sound),2 videos each of fear,happiness and other expressions,6 videos of no expressions.Next,the image recognition of the static micro-expression peak frame is carried out,there is 6 pictures of static micro expression of peak frames,and2 pictures each of fear,happiness and others.Finally,a video of deception detection(including deception and honesty)is presented for the participants to click to judge.There are 32 videos for deception detection(each videos lasts for 30 s and there is no sound),and there are 16 videos each of honest and lying.The Resolution Above is 800*600,in order to avoid the interference of sequential effects,the pictures and video stimuli are presented in a completely random manner.Results:(1)The accuracy of macro-expression recognition in depressed patients was lower than healthy controls,and there were significant differences in both the level of fear and the level of happiness(p<0.05).(2)There is no significant difference in the accuracy of happy micro-expression recognition between depressed patients and healthy controls(p>0.05),but in the recognition of fear micro-expressions,the recognition accuracy of depressed patients is significantly lower than healthy controls(p<0.05).(3)Whether in the depression or normal group,the subjects’ recognition accuracy of happy macro expressions was significantly higher than fear macro expressions(p<0.05),and the recognition accuracy of happy micro-expressions was significantly higher than fear micro expressions(p <0.05).(4)The accuracy of the subject’s deception detection is not significantly related to the accuracy of micro-expression recognition and the accuracy of macro-expression recognition:(p>0.05);but the accuracy of the subject’s micro-expression recognition was significantly positively correlated with the accuracy of macro-expression recognition.Correlation: R=0.22,p<0.05.Conclusion: This study shows that there is a significant difference in facial expression recognition ability between depression patients and normal people.Compared with normal people,the facial expression recognition ability of depression patients is poor,their macro expression recognition ability is impaired,and their fear micro expression recognition ability is also weak.The degree of depression is different,and the ability to recognize fear micro-expressions is different.There is no significant difference between the deception detection ability of depressed patients and normal people.There is no correlation between facial expression recognition ability and deception detection ability.
