Objective To investigate the change of serum sialic acid and its clinical significance in patients with acute cerebral infarction, further study some influence factors of it,and provide the experimental clue for precaution and treatment of cerebral infarction. Methods 60 patients at Hangzhou First People’s Hospital experiencing cerebral infarct that occurred within 72hrs were consecutively incorporated into the study between April 2014 and April 2015,57 age-matched healthy subjects were selected as controls. The level of sialic acid in the blood was measured by Lactate Dehydrogenase Method. All routine blood parameters, including CRP,glucose levels, cholesterol and fibrinogen were determined at the time of sampling SA was measured by lactate dehydrogenase method.60 patients subjected to infarction were evaluated by CT or MRI,and subsequently classified as having a small infarct(≤4cm3),a moderate infarct(5-10cm3)or a large infarct(>10cm3).and patients were classified as having light type(<5 score),moderate(5-20score),heavy type(>20 score)according to NIHSS scores.Further analysis the relationship between SA levels and severity, prognosis and risk factors for cerebral infarction.statistical analysis was carried out by SPSS 17.0.Results 1.The levels of serum sialic acid increased significiantly in patients after acute cerebral infarction compared with normal controls,P<0.01;2.In different infarct volume groups, the concentration of SA in the large infarct group wag higher than the medium and the small groups, the difference is significant,P<0.01;3.The level of serum SA correlated with clinical disability and CRP,Fg;Hypertriglyceridemia, diabetes etc may influence the level of plasma sialic acid. Conclusion 1.SA is associated with cerebral ischemia, especially in patients with severe stroke, demonstrating SA may play an important role in the pathophysiology of acute cerebral infarction and could be of value in future predition and treatment strategies.2.Correlation between SA and CRP,Fg suggests that SA possibly play an important role in the ischemia inflammatory injury and the acute phase response occurring in stroke patients, participating the pathobiology process of cerebral ischemia;3.SA concentration is affected by a number of factors.in addition to stroke, history of diabetes,Hypertriglyceridemia etc are associated with SA levels.
