| Diagnosis delivery is a critical part of doctor-patient communication.Specifically,it is a challenging task for doctors to inform patients of poor health.Meanwhile, for patients, receiving the results is also painful.Although effective doctor-patient communication can help patients better understand disease information and establish trust, improper delivery methods can increase the suffering of patients and affect their ability to adjust and adapt. Therefore,in the process of establishing a harmonious doctor-patient relationship, the process of diagnosis and delivery must be given sufficient attention. This research aims to investigate the needs of patients for emotional support during the diagnosis process and their preference for doctors’ non-verbal behaviors.Furthermore, from the perspective of doctors and patients, empirical research is carried out to explore whether emotionally supportive or nonverbal behaviors which meet the patient’s expectations can improve patients’ satisfaction, adherence(or compliance),or relieve patients’ negative emotions, and also its impact on doctors’ stress and negative emotions.Optimize the process of diagnosis delivery from a dual perspective, hoping to provide a useful reference for subsequent doctor-patient communication strategies.Study1 started by investigating patients’ preferences for doctors’ emotional support and non-verbal behaviors, and by investigating the opinions of 389 patients from two hospitals in Shanghai,to find out what type of emotional support is patients expected. At the same time, distinguish the degree of patient’s need for doctor’s emotional support when facing common diseases and major diseases. What’s more, investigate patients’ preferences for doctors’ non-verbal behaviors, and clarify whether there are differences in their preferences for doctors’ non-verbal behaviors when faced with diseases of different severity.Subsequently, studies 2 and 3 used empirical research methods to explore whether meeting patients’ emotional support expectations could improve their satisfaction and compliance, and reduce negative emotions. The possible impact of emotional support on doctors and patients in the face of different diseases. At the same time,it also discussed whether the non-verbal behaviors could improve the adherence and satisfaction of the patients, the influence of non-verbal behaviors on doctors, and the possible impact of non-verbal behaviors on patients in the face of different diseases.Investigation found that patients expect doctors to provide clear responses that promote further emotional disclosure of patients, rather than vague responses that reduce their emotional disclosure space.Meanwhile, compared with ordinary diseases, patients were more expecting doctors to provide emotional support when facing major diseases.Besides, patients expected doctors to maintain good nonverbal behavior, that was, correct postures, eye contact, and gentle facial expressions or smiling.Furthermore, compared with common diseases, patients facing major diseases paid more attention to doctors’ nonverbal behavior.Study 2 showed that, from the perspective of doctors(that is,when medical students play the role of patients to conduct experiments),A.Compared with no emotional support, the delivery with emotional support can improve patient satisfaction and adherence, and also reduce the patient’s and doctor’s negative emotions.B.Compared with common diseases, patients will have more negative emotions when facing major diseases.C.Generally speaking, compared with not providing emotional support, when doctors provide emotional support to patients, their own negative emotions are lower and there is no significant change in pressure. However, when observing the process of informing about major diseases separately,it is found that providing emotional support to patients by doctors can cause more stress than not providing emotional support. From the perspective of real patients, there is also the phenomenon that the negative emotions reported by patients in the emotional support delivery method were lower, and the satisfaction and adherence were higher.Based on the results of the survey, patients who faced with major illness expected doctors to provide more emotional supports, and when the doctors provide emotional support as their expected, the patient’s negative emotions will decreased more significantly, and at the same time, satisfaction and adherence will be improved. In addition, when there is no emotional support, compared with ordinary diseases, patients are less willing to listen to doctors when facing major diseases.Evidences from study 3 showed that, from the perspective of doctors(also medical students play the role of patients),D.Compared with non-verbal behaviors that did not meet the expectations of patients,non-verbal behaviors which met the expectations of patients could satisfy patients, increased degree and adherence, and at the same time reduces their negative emotions.E.Compared with common diseases, major diseases will bring more intense negative emotions to patients.F.As far as doctors are concerned, compared with non-verbal behaviors that do not conform to expectations, their own negative emotion scores are lower when they adopt non-verbal behaviors that meet the expectations of patients. In the eyes of real patients, the proper non-verbal behaviors can improve the patient’s satisfaction, adherence, and reduce the patients’ negative emotions. What’s more, major diseases will bring more negative emotions to patients than common diseases. In combination with the survey results, patients at this time expect doctors to maintain good nonverbal behaviors, and when doctors maintain nonverbal behaviors as expected by patients, its adherence will be improved to a greater extent.Studies have shown that a diagnosis delivery strateies with emotional support or proper non-verbal Behaviors can effectively improve patient satisfaction, adherence, and reduce patients’ negative emotions.Meanwhile, the above two modes can also reduce the negative emotions of doctors. |
