Abstract/Summary:
The emergence of new communications services as voice over IP (VOIP) or video conferences demands high quality of service (QoS). The network congestion is a main obstacle for these new services to guarantee QoS. As the IP protocol was not designed to cope with congestion, MPLS networks became the most used networks in the provider backbones. They allow the use of traffic engineering to avoid the congestions and improve the transport of the traffic.;This project presents a new axis for the congestion alert definition in the traffic engineering mechanisms. This new technique is the result of an in-depth study of the congestion behavior on a test bed representing an MPLS provider network. The study was also led on the simulator NS-2 and allows a comparison of the results between simulation and test bed.;The congestion prediction algorithm has been defined from the available information of traffic via the SNMP protocol. This new approach was tested on the test bed via a theoretical study and on the similar architecture developed on NS-2. It was also compared with two existing methods: RED and PCN.;Keywords. MPLS, congestion, traffic engineering, prediction; However, the mechanisms developed so far on the MPLS networks are not able to eradicate the congestions completely. These treatments use predefined and fixed thresholds. The detection mechanism cannot cope with the variation of traffic in an efficient manner. Few methods limit the use of the network and do not use the link capacity in an efficient manner. Whereas the others wait for the congestion to start leading to eventually loss of some packets.
