Inspired by the Aesthetics of Reception,this thesis tries to analyze the female images in Water Margin from the readers' perspective.This thesis selects the period of Ming and Qing dynasties and focuses on the literati class.It is of great significance for literati to accept it as the beginning in the history of the reception of Water Margin.The cultural imprints they left influenced the acceptance of later generations and becomes the pre-text accepted by them.On the one hand,from the perspective of the Ming and Qing dynasties literati's acceptance,to analyze their evaluation of female images in Water Margin and the recreation of the female image in the opera,also the continuation of Water Margin based on the novel are analyzed,and then interpret the influence of the era context on the acceptance of female images at that time.On the other hand,using close reading to analysis the commentary,opera and continuation,and make clear to the influence of different text forms on the presentation of the results.Scholars of Ming and Qing dynasties left a large number of research materials on Water Margin for later generations through writing notes,preface,postscript,and comments.However,there are three main forms of female images reading and recreation in this literature: commentary of the Ming and Qing dynasties,drama,and continuation of Water Margin.The paper is composed of five parts:Chapter one is an explanation of the expectations of literati in the Ming and Qing dynasties.It shows that the acceptance of traditional Chinese literature is an acceptance under the ethical culture,and ethics has a great influence on the creation and interpretation of novels.It also explains the core concept of Confucian ethics.Chapter two analyzes the content of female images in the commentary of Water Margin.The comments of Ming and Qing dynasties involve many aspects,and the female images in Water Margin are a kind of ethical judgment.This chapter explains the reasons for this situation and how the critics make judgments through plot and grammar analysis,and explains that the critics' ethical emphasis on female images aims to enhance the indoctrination and exhortation function of vernacular novels.Chapter three analyzes the female images in the Water Margin operas of literati in Ming and Qing dynasties.This thesis expounds the influence of opera,an art form different from novels,on the characterization,which makes the female images refined and flat.Secondly,it explains the conflict between "love" and "ethical"."Virtuous wife" attaches great importance to "ethical",and "adulteress" attaches great importance to "love".The fourth chapter focuses on the analysis of the heroine in the continuation of the Water Margin.Heroine show a kind of "aphasia" in the original works and opera.But in the continuation,the importance of heroine increases.This chapter focuses on the analysis of the continuation's heroine to the orthodox view of women's subversion of the reasons,as well as the specific performance.
