This is a translation project report on The Law of Sex Discrimination,a law monograph in the United States. This book discusses the development of the laws concerning sex discrimination and the changes in social ethics and the treatment towards women, and it consists of nine chapters, covering topics such as '"abortion and reproduction","rights of same-sex couples","domestic violence" and "single-sex education".This author translates the ninth chapter, entitled Feminism in the Twenty-First Century which mainly shows that women still face many discriminations today when women' status has increased dramatically.Concrete cases are presented to explain how cross-border human trafficking and genital mutilation are threatening women' s legitimate rights and interests. In addition, various laws and regulations are listed to illustrate the efforts made by the U.S.government to protect women. There have been great difficulties in translation because the original text is a legal text that is filled with proper nouns and legal terms.Passive voice, parallel structure and sentences with legal characteristics have also made it harder to turn the source language into the target one.Under the guidance of Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory, this author has adopted literal translation as the major strategy and meanwhile applied various translation techniques like amplification, reversion and restructuring when translating the text so that the target readers can understand and appreciate the text in the s'ame way as the original readers do.This author has been deeply aware of the importance of "faithfulness" in legal translation through this practice. The translation should not only remain the linguistic style of the source text, but truthfully reflect the intent of the original author. This requires solid translation skills as well as adequate legal knowledge on the part of the translator. This author hopes that this translation can help readers know more about the pain and horror inflicted on women by human trafficking and genital mutilation, and therefore understand and support feminist movement and pay more attention to gender discrimination.
