A Translation Project Report On The Law Of Sex Discrimination(Excerpt Of Chapter Six)

This is an English-Chinese translation project report on The Law of Sex Discrimination(the fourth edition),which was co-edited by Beth Anne Wolfson,Carla M.Palumbo,J.Ralph Lindgren and Nadine Taub.There are nine chapters in this book.The source text is selected from the sixth chapter,The Family,which mainly talks about the sex discrimination women encountered in the marital relation through specific cases,including the difficulties women in the divorce faces in attempting to recover maintenance and support money,the development of the action for criminal conversation,domestic violence,etc..The translation of the source text not only gives us great insight into the decisions for divorce cases in America,but also provides certain reference for the formulation and perfection of divorce law in China.As the source text in the report is legal text with more professional knowledge,the author has read a great many divorce judgments and legal materials related to the marriage law before translation.In addition,there are many legal terminologies and long and complex sentences with multiplying modifiers in the original of this report,which brings some difficulties and challenges to the understanding of the original for the author.In the translation practice,the author,guided by the functional equivalence proposed by Eugene A.Nida,adopts some translation skills such as sequential,reversing,splitting,etc.to convey the true meaning of the source text and achieve the same legal function between source language text and target language text as soon as possible.The report is composed of four parts:translation project description,task description,case study and conclusion.Through this translation practice,the author has deeply realized that legal texts require professional legal knowledge and learned many legal terminologies and typical sentence expressions and understood the characteristics of sentence patterns in legal English.In conclusion,the author has gained a lot and hopes that this report can provide reference for translation of legal text and formulation and perfection of the marriage law in our country.
