Clinical Observation On Combination Of Scalp Electro-acupuncture And Body Acupuncture Treatment On Lumbar Disc Herniation

Objective: To investigate the effective of the combination of scalp electro-acupuncture and body acupuncture treatment on Lumbar Disc Herniation(LDH).Method: 68 patients who were qualified with the inclusion criteria of LDH were divided into treatment group and control group,each group with 34 patients.The treatment group was given the combination of International scalp electro-acupuncture and body acupuncture treatment;the control group was given body acupuncture treatment only.Two groups of patients were treated 2 times a week,1 time within 3 to 4 days,4 times of treatment considered as a treatment course.After each treatment course was completed,efficacy was recorded.Total of 2 treatment courses were carried out in each patient.After the first and second treatment course,the scores of Visual Analogue Scale(VAS),Japanese Orthopedic Association(JOA)and Oswestry Disability Index(ODI)would be calculated to compare the scores of this two groups of patients before treatment,after the first treatment course and second treatment course,in order to evaluate the efficacy of each group treatment on LDH objectively.Results:(1)VAS score: Comparison within each group,comparison after 1 treatment and 2 treatments with before treatment,comparison after 2 treatments with 1 treatment,VAS scores were decreased in both groups,the difference was statistically significant(P<0.001),comparison between two groups,VAS baseline level before treatment and VAS scores after 1 treatment,the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05),after 2 treatments,the VAS score of treatment group is lower than control group,the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05),the efficacy of treatment group in controlling pain is better than control group.(2)JOA score: Comparison within each group,comparison after 1 treatment and 2 treatments with before treatment,comparison after 2 treatments with 1 treatment,JOA scores were increased in both groups,the difference was statistically significant(P<0.001),comparison between two groups,JOA baseline level before treatment and JOA scores after 1 treatment,the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05),after 2 treatments,the JOA score of treatment group is higher than control group,the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05),the efficacy of treatment group in improving the overall symptoms and clinical signs is better than control group.(3)ODI score: Comparison within each group,comparison after 1 treatment and 2 treatments with before treatment,comparison after 2 treatments with 1 treatment,ODI scores were decreased in both groups,the difference was statistically significant(P<0.001),comparison between two groups,ODI baseline level before treatment and ODI scores after 1 treatment,the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05),after 2 treatments,the ODI score of treatment group is lower than control group,the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05),the efficacy of treatment group in improving the functions of limbs is better than control group.(4)Overall efficacy: For the treatment group,the obvious effective rate,effective rate and ineffective rate were 62%,38% and 0%;for control group,the obvious effective rate,effective rate and ineffective rate were 11.8%,88.2% and 0%.The comparison of overall efficacy between two groups,treatment group was higher than control group,the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusion:(1)The treatment of either combination of scalp electro-acupuncture and body acupuncture treatment or body acupuncture treatment is effective in treating LDH,both can relieve pain,improve the overall symptoms,clinical signs such as the soreness and pain of lumbar and legs,walking,standing,bending the waist and walking,and functions of the limbs.(2)There will be no significant difference between the two treatment methods in the efficacy of relieving pain,improving the overall symptoms,clinical signs and function of the limbs in two weeks.(3)After the treatments courses are completed,the efficacy of combination of scalp electroacupuncture and body acupuncture treatment is more outstanding in relieving pain,improving the overall symptoms,clinical signs and function of the limbs than body acupuncture treatment in four weeks.(4)The overall efficacy of the combination of scalp electro-acupuncture and body acupuncture treatment is more excellent than body acupuncture treatment.
