| Objective:The purpose of this study was to design a randomized controlled trial to explore the effect of elastic band resistance exercise on body composition, muscle strength and quality of life of breast cancer patients,so as to provide the scientific evidence for elastic band resistance exercise in the rehabilitation program of breast cancer patients. Methods:In this study, literature consultation, experimental method and mathematical statistics method were used.Twenty four patients with breast cancer were randomly allocated into the experimental group and control group. The experimental group performed home-based elastic band resistance exercise for eight weeks.Exercise included standing front raise, hip abduction, standing biceps curls, seated leg extension, seated chest press, and standing lateral raise. In the first week, the patients were performed bare-handed exercise two times per week, each exercise completed two sets. From the second week to the fourth week, the patients were performed elastic band resistance exercise two times per week, each exercise completed two sets. From the fifth week to the eighth week, the patients were performed elastic band resistance exercise three times per week, each exercise completed three sets.Total eight to twelve repetitions in the whole exercise program. The control group maintained usual care during the intervention period.Patient’s body weight,BMI,waist circumference, body fat rate, lean body mass, grip strength and FACT-B scale were measured before and after intervention to evaluate the intervention effectiveness. After data collection,chi-square test,t-test and repetitive measurement and analysis ofvariance were used for analysis.Results:(1)Body composition: Before and after intervention, there were no statistically significant differences in body weight,BMI,waist circumference, body fat rate and lean body mass of patients in the experimental group(P>0.05).Furthermore,no significant differences in body weight,BMI,waist circumference, body fat rate and lean body mass were noticed between experimental group and control groups following intervention(P>0.05).(2)Muscle strength: Grip strength in the experimental group showed increased trend after intervention, and there was a significant statistical difference compared to baseline(P<0.01).However,grip strength of control group was not significantly altered(P>0.05).After intervention, the grip strength of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group, and there was a significant difference(P<0.05).(3)Quality of life: The total score of FACT-B and the physical well-being of patients from experimental group showed increased trend after intervention, and there was a significant difference(P<0.01).The functional well-being of patients in experimental group was also increased, and the score was significantly different compared to baseline(P<0.05).Nevertheless,no statistical significant differences were found in the social/family well-being,the emotional well-being,and the additional attention in the experimental group after intervention. Moreover, the total score of FACT-B in the experimental group was higher than that of the control group following intervention, and this difference was statistically significant(P<0.01).After intervention, the physical well-being and functional well-being of patients from experimental group were significantly higher than those of from control group(P<0.05).There was no significant difference in the social/family well-being,emotional well-being,and additional attention between experimental and control groups after intervention(P>0.05).Conclusion:(1)Elastic band exercise can improve the muscle strength of breast cancer patients.(2)Elastic band exercise can improve the quality of life of breast cancer patients.(3)The effect of elastic band exercise on body composition of breast cancer patients needs to be further investigated. |
