Objective: To introduce and evaluate the clinical effect of a novel 3D printed donor model in the third molar transplantation. Methods: Patients who were treated in our hospital from January 2018 to December 2019 were involved in this study. All patients were randomly divided into the 3D printing group and the traditional transplantation group by the random number table. The 3D printing group adopted computer-aided design combined with 3D printing technology for autotransplantation of teeth. The traditional transplantation group used traditional methods. The study were analyzed from demographic data, extraoral time of donor teeth, preparation time of alveolar socket, times of trials of donor teeth, initial stability, distance between the root surface of the donor tooth and the alveolar socket of the recipient area, postoperative swelling, pain VAS score, opening degree and results of postoperative follow-up 12 months by using SPSS 25.0 software package. Results: 3D printing group: 11 males and 25 females, average age(29.58 ± 7.00)years old, traditional transplantation group: 12 males and 24 females, average age(29.03 ± 5.97)years old, there was no statistical difference between the two groups in age(P>0.05).The 3D printed group’s extraoral time and times of trials of donor teeth were significantly smaller than those of the traditional transplantation group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.01).The 3D printed group’s preparation time of alveolar socket and initial stability were less than those of the traditional transplantation group, and there was statistically significant(P<0.05).There was no significant difference between the two groups in the distance between the root surface of the donor teeth and the anterior alveolar socket(P>0.05).The pain VAS scores of the 3D printing group at 1h and 24 h after surgery were lower than those of the traditional transplantation group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).The opening degree between the two groups was not statistically significant(P>0.05).The postoperative swelling was smaller than those of the traditional transplantation group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).According to the results of follow-up observation at 12 months, the success rate of 3D printing group was higher than that of traditional transplantation group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Moreover,there was no significant difference between the two group in retention rate(P>0.05).Conclusion: The study has obtained good clinical effects by using a novel 3D printed donor model in the third molar transplantation. The 3D printing technology has obvious advantages in the extraoral time and times of trials of donor tooth compared with the traditional transplantation method, which can significantly reduce the extraoral time and times of trials of donor tooth.Compared with the traditional transplantation group, the 3D printing group has the advantages of less trauma, lightly postoperative reaction and higher success rate.It is worthy of widespread clinical application and promotion.
