Under the background of the double first-class construction and the English level of college students has increased rapidly, the teaching of academic English has been paid more and more attention by Chinese tertiary universities.Academic English(EAP)teaching began at Chinese universities. In recent years,EAP has become a research hotspot in the field of foreign language teaching, but many studies focusing on the study of participants from English major and non-English majors,Science and Technology are explored by researchers. However, there are very few researchers investigated the needs of EAP for medical postgraduates in China. Therefore, this study used questionnaires and semi-structured interviews methods to investigate the EAP needs and difficulties of medical postgraduates, aiming to provide a reference for EAP courses in medical majors, following questions will be answered:(1)What are the needs of EAP for medical postgraduates in double first-class university?(2)What are difficulties in EAP for medical postgraduates in double first-class university?(3)What are suggestions on EAP courses for medical postgraduates in Chinese double first-class universities?Through interviews with medical postgraduates, academic English teachers, and questionnaires of 110 first-year medical postgraduates, this study found that medical postgraduates have great demand for learning academic English and opening EAP courses and they are also meeting a lot of difficulties in academic English learning. The results of the study show that medical postgraduates have low satisfaction with their competence of academic English.EAP courses are highly and strongly needed. In academic English writing skills, students have the greatest need for writing papers and abstracts. In academic English reading skills, the needs of reading papers and abstracts are strongly too.Besides, with the constant exchanges between international and Chinese academia, more and more foreign experts are invited to do academic reports and the number of exchanges abroad has increased in double first-class universities. Therefore, students long for taking part in academic lectures with high competence of academic English listening and speaking skills and they have relatively strong demand for academic English listening and speaking skills.Besides, the study also shows that the most difficulty thing for medical postgraduates in EAP skills is academic English writing especially in the aspect of using appropriate academic writing style. In academic English reading skill, taking notes and understanding professional vocabulary in own words are the biggest problems students facing. In interviews, medical postgraduates also said that medical vocabulary is too difficult to recognize and master. In academic English listening and speaking skills, what the difficulties of students facing are lack of confidence in expressing their opinions and ideas. This dilemma students cannot actively participate in academic teaching activities in the classroom because of lacking of confidence which is pointed by language teachers in interviews.Compared with the other three skills, students have less than difficulties in understanding key vocabulary in academic listening skills. What's more, this study also investigated the academic English literacy of medical postgraduate students. It can be seen that in the past five years,two-thirds of the medial postgraduates have already learned relevant and standard of academic English literacy which has been improved significantly to some degree, but medical postgraduates don't know accurately how to cite normative knowledge. In the end, this study also showed some constructive suggestions on academic English curriculum of medical postgraduates by investigating students' needs of EAP and the difficulties they are facing in their postgraduate period.Several suggestions are put forward as follows: 1)The needs analysis should be paid much attention in EAP curriculum for medical postgraduates in double first-class university,2)The teaching objective should be analyze students' problems and necessities, expectations, gaps to determine the realistic and accurate needs of students from macro to micro perspectives for medical postgraduates in double first-class university,3)The development of EAP course is suitable for students not only taken the teaching faculty but also the teaching activities and contents into consideration to improve the efficiency of EAP teaching for medical postgraduates in Chinese double first-class universities.
