| Objective:To investigate the prevalence of Metabolic syndrome(Mets)in drug-na(?)ve inpatients with bipolar diorder(BD).Method: We examined 125 adult(aged 18–65 years)patients diagnosed with BD according to ICD-10 and 201 age-and gender-matched general people. The Mets was ascertained according to Chinese Diabetes Society(CDS)criteria.General demographic data, case characteristics, and metabolic index(body mass index(BMI),blood pressure,triglycerides,High-density lipoprotein cholesterol, fasting glucose,Total cholesterol,Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol)were recorded.Independent samples t-test and Pearson chi-square was applied for continuous variables, the chi-squared test or Fischer’s exact test was applied for categorical variables.Results:1.Between the patients,69(55.2%)patients were women and 56(44.2%)were men.The mean age was lower than the control group(36.75±10.91 vs 31.66±11.85,P < 0.01).2.BD patients showed higher prevalence of Mets compared to the population sample(9.6% vs 8.5%).After adjusting for age and gender confounders, the difference between the two groups was statistically significant(P<0.05).There was significant difference in the systolic blood pressure between the patients and population sample(127.66±16.21 vs 122.67±16.48,P<0.01).3.The prevalence of Mets is higher in female(14.5% vs 5.8%).Being BD,gender, age and BMI were independent risk factors for metabolic syndrome.4.There were no statistically significant differences in gender, age, metabolic components,or the prevalence of metabolic syndrome between patients in depressive(n=37)and manic-episodes(n=75).Conclusion:It indicated higher risk of comorbid with Mets in drug-na(?)ve BD patients.Being BD,gender, age and BM may be the mainrisk factors. |
