Hobson’s Treatise On Physiology And Its Spread And Influence In China

Research objectives: Modern times is an important transition in Chinese history and a flourishing period of the western medicine introduced into China.The arrival of the protestant missionaries brought Western medicine,science and technology,culture and so on into China,deeply influenced the life of Chinese people.Among them,the development of traditional Chinese medicine was suffered huge impact.The argument between traditional Chinese medicine’s existence and abolishment began.Through studies of British missionary,Benjamin Hobson,his personal life and Representative publications——Treatise on Physiology,In this essay,the spread of western medicine in China and the influence to TCM and the society were discussed,and the significant meaning for external communication of traditional Chinese medicine’s culture also being discussed.Research methods: Based as the Communication research method,starting from five elements(5W): the disseminator,the information content,the effect of medium carrier,the waiters,this essay studied Hobson’s Treatise on Physiology and its spread and influence in China.Literature method and descriptive method are also adopted for studies of Benjamin Hobson’s personal life and works,and versions,contents,writing characteristics,academic value of Treatise on Physiology,combined with social and cultural background,to analyze and comb Treatise on Physiology,analogizing the method of external communication of traditional Chinese medicine’s culture.Research content: This essay is totally divided into four parts.The first part mainly introduces the background and meaning of the study,research status relating to the subject,and the way of thinking and innovation in this essay.The second part mainly introduces Benjamin Hobson and his Treatise on Physiology,including: his personal life experience,important contributions in China and the introduction of Treatise on Physiology.The third one mainly talks about the influence of western medicine in China,including the contradictions between TCM and western medicine,the emergence of the confluence of Chinese and Western medicine and the modernization of medical system and medical education in China.And through the propagation mode of western medicine to study ways of external communication of traditional Chinese medicine’s culture,which is the fourth part.Conclusions: Nearly 20-year working in China,Benjamin Hobson made great contributions to the spread of western medicine and science technology to the East.Treatise on Physiology,the first systematic treatise to introduce western anatomy and physiology in modern China,laid a solid foundation for the popularization and development of western medicine.Medical missionaries,represented by Benjamin Hobson,pushed the process of the western medicine introduced into China,changing the traditional medical system and Medical training mode.To study the development history of western medicine is revealed and referential to the revival of national culture and the spread of traditional Chinese medicine to the west.
