Tai Chi Quan,Chinese traditional slow movements for mind and body health, can effectively connect Eastern and Western medicine to promote natural ways to benefit health.Contemporary research on Tai Chi Quan predominantly focuses on its forms and technical skills, which is the meaning of "Quan," but ignores the important role of "Tai Chi" which represents the yin and yang philosophy. The main purpose of this research project is to explore the integrative value of Tai Chi Quan along with Eastern and Western medicine to better help the world health crisis in the post pandemic era.The data for this project was collected through a survey of the US News Rankings top twenty Integrative Medicine Programs, the top 10 Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)colleges in the USA,and two highly ranked TCM universities in China.Statistical analysis was used to determine the percentage of programs that study Tai Chi Quan and TCM for health.Forty four Tai Chi Quan students in the US were surveyed for their depth of understanding about the relationships among Tai Chi Quan,Tai Chi philosophy, and TCM.In addition,semi-structured interviews were conducted with two founders of world-renowned Tai Chi Quan international organizations. This study found that 80%of the surveyed Integrated Medicine Programs in the US have research centers for studying and applying Tai Chi Quan and TCM.However, only 0.2%of the dissertation topics from two top TCM universities in China were related to Tai Chi Quan.Surveys of US Tai Chi Quan students indicated that 88%thought both Tai Chi theory/philosophy,traditional preventive medicine, and Tai Chi skills were important to learn.Ninety-one percent believe that studying TCM would be a good addition.Interviews with international experts from Australia and the US revealed that increased numbers of well-known medical organizations acknowledge the benefits of Tai Chi Quan and note that Tai Chi Quan studies are widely valued by western medicine demonstrated by Tai Chi Quans increased popularity in the western world. This study indicates that although studying Tai Chi Quan is valued in both the west and in China, academic research has not focused on the concepts and theory of TCM nor the philosophy/theory of Tai Chi Quan. The results show there is a trend to study only the physical portion of Tai Chi Quan, ignoring its deep-rooted history in disease prevention and cultural emphasis on its philosophy. When the external and internal aspects of Tai Chi Quan are combined, the natural methods for overall health and quality of life are a result. This project encourages deepening the research into the cultural foundation of Yin and Yang balance, along with western alternative medicine studies. When combined, the three dimensions of the black and white Tai Chi symbol will enhance the traditional wisdom and natural life in the modern world and result in disease prevention in our post-pandemic world.
