Objective:This study is to evaluate the clinical effects of the combination of Chinese traditional acupoint application and Western medicine on child asthma remission Period through prospective randomized clinical research and hoping our study could Provide evidence for clinical therapy for child asthma during remission Period.Method:During March 2013- December 2014, we enrolled 308 subjects aged 7-14 years-old, with asthma diagnosis at asthma remission stage at Central Hospital of Shaoyang City, The First Affiliated Hospital of Shaoyang Medical College, Shaoyang Medical College Affiliated Hospital and Combination of Chinese and Western Hospital of Shaoyang City. According to the treatment strategy of enrolled children, subjects were classified into mild intermittent, mild Persistent and moderate Persistent layers. Among each layer, subjects were randomized into trial (combination of Chinese traditional acupoint application and Western medicine) and control (Placebo acupoint application and Western medicine) group. There were total of 4 subjects lost to follow up and finally 304 subjects were enrolled in analysis. In the trial group, the acupoint application contains Baijiezi, Yanhusuo, Gansui and Xixin which were mixed in proper of 4:3:2:3, then whisk with water to make it into Paste, finally cut into 1cm in diameter. The acupoint was pasted on Dingchuan, Danzhong, Feishu, Xinshu and Pishu, fixed with adhesive plaster and kept on the skin for 2 hours once a week. And there are total of 4 times (which takes 4 weeks) of acupoint applications. The control group used placebo paste that made with honey and corn flour. Three months later, the lung function, quality of life and the asthma attack rate were compared between trial and control groups.Results:1. ComPared with Prior-treatment, the total scores of PAQLQ (Pediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire) for all subjects were improved (P<0,05) 3 month after the acupoint/placebo treatment. After 4 weeks acupoint or placebo application treatment, the asthma attack rates among trial and control groups have no statistical significance (40.79% Vs.50.00%,P>0.05).No statistical significance was found between baseline and 3 month after acupoint/placebo treatment on the prevalence of normal lung function (P>0.05).2. Stratified by asthma severity, the asthma attack rates among trial and control groups were only statistical significant in mild intermittent layer (21.05% Vs.44.74%, P<0.05), not in mild persistent or moderate persistent layers.3. There were no significant statistical differences between two groups on the distribution of total scores for PAQLQ, scores for symptom domain, activity limitation domain or emotional function domain.4. Trial group subjects were more likely to be with normal lung function than control group in mild intermittent layer. No significant differences were observed between two groups in mild Persistent or moderate persistent layers.Conclusion:1. The combination of Chinese traditional acupoint application therapy and Western medicine could significantly improve the lung function and reduce the asthma attack rate for the mild intermittent children asthma.2. This therapy has no significant improvement on the quality of life, the lung function or asthma attack rate for the mild persistent or moderate persistent children asthma.
