Since the 21 st century, the ecological environment problems such as global warming, carbon balance disorders, loss of biodiversity, energy shortages and environmental degradation are more and more serious, sustainable development has became the key challenge to city all over the world. As an indispensable part of human society, transportation has made a tremendous contribution to the development of city. However, with the continuous improvement of mechanization, car has been used frequently which produced a series of environmental and resource problems, caused many serious influences on China's industrialization and urbanization process. Thus,it is a great threat to the survival of mankind in the future. As a new concept, green transportation has the goal to achieve sustainable development in the area of reducing traffic congestion, air pollution, noise pollution and solving the problems of parking, which brings a positive effect to city.Based on this background, the urban area in Chongqing has been chosen as the research scope in this thesis, and carry out the evaluation of green transportaion in the view of sustainable development research theory, the followings are six main contents in this thesis with the corresponding results:(1)This paper gives an overview on sustainable development theory, introduces the concept of sustainable development by putting forward the background, connotation and its main content,as well as the relationship between ecological city and sustainable development; The connotation of green transportation was presented, including the origin, definition, advantages of green transportation and its development strategy; The concept of sustainable urban traffic development was reviewed by analyzing its connotation and characteristics, illustrates the basic goals of sustainable urban traffic development, and the relationship between green transportation and sustainable urban traffic development was discussed.(2)From six principles of constructing the comprehensive evaluation index system of green transportation,12 indicators(eg.rail site coverage of 500 metres)were selected to constitute the comprehensive evaluation index system of urban green transportation in mountain area from the three aspects that are traffic facilities level, transportation service quality and the urban environment.(3)Using both of the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP)and information entropy method to calculate the weights of evaluation indexes, and by using linear weighted method to get the combination weights;Comprehensive index evaluation method was used to construct comprehensive evaluation model, and then the synthetical index of green transportation is calculated.(4)Based on the comprehensive evaluation index system, taking nine disrict in Chongqing urban area as an example to introduce the data collection method and processing procedure of 12 indexes in detail, and then generating thematic map of each index by using ArcGIS software.(5)According to the evaluation model established before, calculating the combination weight value and the comprehensive evaluation index value of 12 indexes.Conducted comprehensive analysis from four aspects that are traffic facilities level, transportation service quality, urban environment and the overall development level of green transportation based on the evaluation results.(6)Experiences from London Congestion Charging policy in the UK and the Curitiba Bus Rapid Transit system in Brazil were discussed, then putting forward several suggestions from traffic facilities level, transportation service quality and urban environment these three aspects based on the evaluation results and two foreign cases, which is of great significance to the development of green transportation in Chongqing urban area.
