According to the specific applications, the image acquisition and processing system can be divided into real time system and non-real time system. Due to the enoumous data in an image, for the real time system high processing speed must be guaranteed. Because of the high speed and parallel computing feature of FPGA, this article brings out an image acquitision and pre-processing system based on FPGA. With FPGA image acquisition and pre-processing can be fulfilled quickly, besides this, after being pre-processed the amount of data can be significantly reduced thus can make it much easier for the following process.Design the hardware according to the architecture of the system. The job mainly includes configuration circuit design of FPGA, image sensor interface design, SDRAM interface design, VGA interface design, system power supply design and oscillator design. After completing the hareware design, with the top-down design method, the hardware driver design can be devided into several modules. It mainly contains system clock and reset module, image sensor controller module, image acquisition module, SDRAM controller module, VGA display controller module, DM9000 A controller module.After correctly finishing the fundamental function of the system, noise reduction and edge detection can be implemented. Edge detection is widly used in object recongnition, image segmentation and so on. There are many ways to achieve edge detection in an image, in this article gradient method with Sobel operator is been used.The final test of the system shows that it can work well for a long time without fail. Thus next stage of design can be carried on.
