On Migrant Workers' Image In The Reports Of Spring Festival Rush (2005-2015)

Spring Festival travel rush is China's unique social phenomenon.During this period,nearly 30 million people involved in a large-scale migrations which take place across the country.From urban to rural,from the east to the west,Spring Festival rush is a reflection of the more far-reaching and profounder social issues.The urban-rural dual social structure and household registration system,the vigorous development of urban and the depression of rural,huge imbalance of the regional economic development,etc.All of them are key concerns of government and academia.It is not difficult to find that the figure of migrant workers appears in these issues frequently.The separation of peasants property and workers property which caused by Household Registration System is the origin of migrant workers.The circular transform form peasants status to workers status which caused by the urban-rural gap and regional disparities created Spring Festival rush.It can be said that issues of Spring Festival rush and migrant workers are inseparable.This study take the annual Spring Festival rush report which are related to the migrant workers as the research object.In order to keep richness and controllability of sample,the author choose the relevant reports form People's Daily?Workers Daily?Farmers'daily and Xinhua Daily Telegraph between 2005 to 2015.The former three newspapers represent the authoritative voice of government and take the farmers and workers as report objects.Xinhua Daily Telegraph will selecte reports from other media,choice of this paper can make the sample more rich and diverse.With the application of the content analysis method,in combination with Quantitative data statistics and discourse analysis,the author study on the sample.The study pay attention to these problems,which are what kind of image migrant workers are presented as;how the migrant workers to be presented;how the medium to generate their existing tendency;how they to construct the image of migrant workers through various word form and what kind of social influence can the constructed image cause.Discussion of these issues constitute the main article.In order to inspect the basic situation of mainstream media image of migrant workers in Spring Festival rush reports and to describe the outline of these people,The first chapter of the paper analyzed the quantity?the form?the topics and the sources of sample reports.Preliminary findings are that the mainstream media image of migrant workers are faceless vulnerable groups receiving government assistance.The second chapter maked further description and analysis for image frame highlighted by sample reports to inductive several main kinds of migrant workers' images and the discourse construction process.The study found that in addition to be constructed as vulnerable group who take assitance from government and social,the migrant workers are also constructed as group integrated into the city and indicators of the economic situation.This paper argues that there are several defects existing in the representation and construction of mainstream media image of migrant workers.Including stereotypization?ortherization and abstraction.Stereotypization means that the migrant workers are presented as stereotype.Ortherization means that the migrant workers have lost subject images and right of speech.Abstraction means that the artificially separation and being pulled away from social background of migrant workers' image.At the critical point of identity transformation from workers to farmers,migrant workers are noticed for being useful for city as workers and neglected as famers.The above problems can be attributed to the following reasons.Urban and rural isolation caused by social system,deviation of migrant worker' value acknowledge caused by society development philosophy of city-center concept,the tendency of chasing interests of media under the market economy environment,cultural barriers between urban and rural areas and the traditional News concepts and operation methods.As long as the imbalance development between urban and rural areas exist,the Spring Festival rush and migrant workers rush exist.During this particular scenario,presenting more rational and humanized reports of migrant workers is the direction of efforts.
