A Survey On The Use Of English Articles By Senior High School Students

Articles is one kind 'form word' in English,including the,a/an,and zero article.However,there are no articles in Chinese.The English article is one of the most difficult grammatical elements to learn for senior high school students whose native language don't have articles.The writer finds the poor of acquisition and frequent misuse of the articles in the practice of teaching.The paper tries to discuss the types of article errors so as to analyse the causes of article errors using the text analysis and investigation method.Based on the errors and misuses existing in the examination papers,the writer attempts to analyse and compare the article errors among senior high students using Excel 2003.This study chooses sixty Grade Two students in Chang Bai shan NO.1 Senior High School as participants to having a understanding of the current situation.The result shows that among the three kinds of articles,students use the definite article best and zero article worst.The investigating results show that among the three kinds of article errors,students make more redundancy errors,fewer confusion errors and the least omission errors.The accuracy rate of the indefinite article is higher than that of the definite article in the fill-in-blank questions,while the accuracy rate of the definite article is higher than that of the indefinite article in the writing task.The difference between the accuracy in the two parts illustrates that different tasks can influence the use of articles.The reasons of these errors can be summarized as influence of the native language,the incomplete application of rules and false concepts hypothesized,personal reasons and other reasons.This study found out causes of those errors through studying the the use of English articles by senior high school students.The thesis also provides some suggestions for teachers in English article teaching.
