Bulgakov's last novel,The Master and Margarita, consists of the story of Devil's visit to Moscow, the love story of Master and Margarita, and the story of Pontius Pilate written by Master.Employing the “three-body” paradigm, this thesis tries to analysis the novel's narrative strategy and its full meaning with the term of “Significant Form” which submitted by Clive Bell.Form the perspective of the relationship between Bulgakov and his time, the "three-body" structure provides a mirror in which one can perceive the writer's mental exploration. As a light in the dark,Bulgakov brings an illustration to these three vivid stories as well as to his own pursuit of free writing. As the core of the “three-body” structure, the story of Pontius Pilate written by the protagonist “Master,” which is defined as the historical story in this thesis, reverse the subversion of the value of Soviet reality. In this process,an underlying resonate between Master and Pontius Pilate should be observed. In the mean time, one can also find a tension in the “three-body” structures form the perspective narrative style--magic and realistic, magic and romantic, solemn and melancholy. Also, these tensions embodied in the novel reflect the intense relationship between the writer, his writing and the world he lived in.
