As one of the foremost novelists of Silver Time in Russia, Mikhail Bulgakov is best known for his The Master and Margarita, which is the condensation and manifestation of Bulgakov's moral exploration, humanistic ideas, philosophy, esthetics thoughts and literary style in his creative life. His creation is a contradiction between genius and times. Many research works have paid more attention to the relationship between The Master and Margarita and traditional literature. In fact, The Master and Margarita has lots of modern characteristics received few attention, that leads to the unbalance of the research. This paper attempts to reveal comparisons of the traditional and modern characteristics of the novel, from the aspects of narrative method, characters portrait. On the aspects of narrative method, Bulgakov employs not only the traditional way of lineal and omniscient narrative, but also the modern way of multi-space-time design; on the character portrait, Bulgakov embodies the traditional pattern and subversive tendency. Bulgakov, created in the late nineteenth century and the first twentieth century, is not a totally realistic writer, but a great successor and seeker of traditional and modern literature.
