On Henry Rosemont Jr.and Roger T.Ames' Representation Of Ethics In English Translation Of Xiaojing

In the late Qing Dynasty,Xiaojing(Chinese)was translated into foreign languages.Foreign translations of Chinese Xiaojing have promoted the transmission of Chinese Xiao Culture.However,translators were mainly missionaries during that period.Their translations were consciously or unconsciously tinged with strong Christian flavor.Henry Rosemont Jr.and Roger T.Ames tried to rectify name for the Confucian philosophy by setting up a Confucian philosophical vocabulary,which may help the westerners better understand Chinese philosophy and let Chinese philosophy have its own voice in a western dominant discourse system.There are six English versions of Xiaojing(????in Chinese).According to the data collected by the author,Henry Rosemont Jr.and Roger T.Ames's The Chinese Classic of Family Reverence enjoys the most popularity.Though the research of English translation of Xiaojin(????)appeared nearly at the same time as the publication of The Chinese Classic of Family Reverence,Henry Rosemont Jr.and Roger T.Ames's version is far less noticed compared with that of James Legge's.The present thesis adopts text analysis and case study as main instruments to analyze The Chinese Classic of Family Reverence and concludes that:First,as a cross-cultural social activity,translation has to be constrained by social norms,translation ethics and personal value orientation.Second,translation is not only a process of linguistic transformation,but also a process to represent and restructure ethics and values of the original text.Third,though constrained by ethics and norms,as the subject of translation activity,translators can exert his subjecti'vity and adopt appropriate translation strategies,methods and techniques to represent and restructure the values and ethics of the original.No matter on lexical level,syntactical level or on textual level,Henry Rosemont Jr.and Roger T.Ames followed the translation ethics norms and represented and restructured the ethics and values in Xiaojing(Chinese).
