Objective: Micro-plasma is a very unique radio frequency energy transmitted by a micro-ablative radio-frequency. It can ablate and penetrate through the skin tissue, then make a minimally invasive channel, with a little heat damage. The depth of the damage can be controlled and the surrounding healthy tissues are not affected. This technique is used as a clinical treatment for pitted scars, acne scars, stretch marks etc. However, there has hardly study been performed in hypertrophic scars. This study aim to evaluate the efficiency and safety of micro-plasma radio-frequency in the treatment of hypertrophic scars.Method: A total 17 patients with hypertrophic scars were enrolled, including 11 females and 6 males, ages 16-47 years( The average age is 29.3). In terms of the locations of scars, 10 cases are on face, 3 cases are on neck, 3 cases are on upper-arms, the last case is on chest. VSS points are between 4 to 9 before treatment. All scar lesions were treated with micro-plasma instrument from Israel company( Alma Lascrs Ltd).A series(typically 2 to 4) treatment sessions were conducted for each patient at 8 weeks intervals. Assessment included VSS points before and after the treatment and patients’ satisfaction with the treatment. Side effects were evaluated as well. Results: All cases have a clinical improvement followed up by 2-4 month after the last treatment. The average VSS points decreased from 6.4 to 4.4(P<0.05). All patients were satisfied with the effect of the treatment. Side effects were limited to transient redness and swelling. No post treatment pigmentary changes and other severe side effect were noted. Downtime was minimal-to-none for all cases. Conclusion: These data illustrate that treatment of hypertrophic scars with micro-plasma radio-frequency is effective and safe. Continued clinical studies of further treatment are underway.
