PurposeTo develop a simple, reliable, effective multicultural nursing competence instrument for accessing the multicultural nursing competence of undergraduate student nurses(SNs), and at the same time to provide the reference basis for hospital carrying out targeted measures to improve SNs' the standard of multicultural nursing competence.MethodsThe framework of multicultural nursing competence instrument for SNs was initially defined by the research group through reviewing literature and opening questionnaire. Then, twenty domestic experts were selected, including 6 nursing management experts,10 nursing educational experts, 4 clinical nursing experts. The index system of multicultural nursing for SNs and a primary scale with 5 subscales, 63 items were revised after two rounds of expert consultation. 700 SNs from 10 hospitals in Hunan, Fujian, Shanghai, Guangdong province were picked out by cluster sampling and investigated with multicultural nursing competence scale(test edition), demography questionnaire and intercultural sensitivity scale. The data were analyzed with the SPSS18.0 and AMOS21.0 statistic software packages. The items on the competence instrument were retained or deleted after item analysis. Internal consistency reliability, split half reliability, retest reliability were used to examine reliability of the scale, while correlation analysis, exploratory factor analysis confirmatory factor analysis were used to determine construct validity.Results1 Establish multicultural nursing competence instrument including 5 subscales, 9 factors, 49 items.(1)Cultural cognition subscales consisted of 1 factors(5 items);(2)Cultural attitude subscale included 1 factor(5 items);(3)Cultural knowledge subscale consisted of 3 factors: multicultural elementary knowledge(5 items), cultural knowledge on health(7 items) and cultural knowledge on health seeking behaviors(10 items);(4)Cultural skills subscale consisted of 2 factors: evaluation and implementation of multicultural nursing(4 items), solving the problems encountered in multicultural nursing(3 items).(5)Cultural encounter subscale consisted of 2 factors: implement cultural interaction(7 items) and understanding the mode of cultural interaction(3 items).2 The validity and coefficient of final scale. An exploratory factor analysis of the five subscales showed factor loading both greater than 0.35. The 5 subscales' ?~2/df were 0.823~1.339, REMSEA were 0.000~0.072, GFI were 0.852~0.984, AGFI were 0.780~0.918, CFI were 0.981~1.000, NFI were 0.858~0.974. Furthermore, the correlations among the five dimensions were statistically significant(P < 0.01). The scale's structure validity was good. The scale's Cronbach's ? were 0.817~0.958, split coefficient was 0.700~0.868, the test-retest coefficient was 0.807~0.944.ConclusionThe multicultural nursing competence instrument for SNs demonstrated good reliability and validity, and can be utilized in nursing education programs and research.
