The Remote sensing images and the land-use maps were used in this study as the basic materials.First of all,the 3 new bands were derived from three thematic indices, which are Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index(SAVI),Modified Normalized Differences Water Index(MNDWI),and Normalized Differences Built-up Index(NDBI).A supervised classification was carried out on this new 3-band image and the urban built-up lands were extracted from the classified maps. The results show that the urban area of Luojiang District of Quanzhou has increased by 27.06km2 during the seven-year study duration. In the second place,a model of quantitatively monitoring the vegetation coverage at TM image scale in Luojiang District of Quanzhou is developed based on NDVI and vegetation coverage pixel decomposed model,on which the dynamic change of vegetation coverage in the county in 1994 and 2002 is researched. The results showed that the area with low vegetation coverage in 2002 was significantly enlarged than that in 1994,and it was increased by 78.3036 km2,the area with high vegetation coverage in 2002 was significantly reduced than that in 1994,and it was reduced by 53.2593 km2.The proportions of the areas with moderate and high vegetation coverage were reduced in varying degrees.During the research period, the area of the regions of vegetation type without change was 20 303.17 km2,which occupied 52.22%of the total area and was mainly composed of the regions with high vegetation coverage. The area of the regions where the vegetation was regenerated was 4689.9 km2,and the area of the regions where the vegetation was degenerated was 13 888.35 km2,and it was 2.96 times of that where the vegetation was regenerated. All these reveal that the vegetation coverage in the study area is currently reduced. The causes resulting in the change of vegetation coverage in the study area are analyzed. And then,to create UHI maps, normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI) maps. The relationship of UHI and NDVI were also analyzed using Linear regression analysis. Results showed that NDVI has large relationship with UHI.It was found that NDVI was negatively correlated with UHI(p=0.0001<0.05).Last but not least, studied the landscape pattern by using GIS and major landscape indices with the current land use map in Luojiang District of Quanzhou. The results showed that woodlands are the main landscape with the highest diversity and lowest fragmentation.Agricultural land, garden land, residential land and water area have the higher evenness, higher diversity and higher fragmentation. In total, the landscape of land use is single with low diversity and low fragmentation, the difference between landscapes are low. Some corresponding studying countermeasures are put forward to dealing with the main existing problems in land use at present. Quanzhou Luojiang will be divided into three major areas of ecological functions of planning, and make the corresponding ecological protection measures, planning the construction of its direction.
