Grinding is an important process when machining cutting tools. Optimizing grinding processes and establishing the intelligent database contribute to promoting enterprise information management and intelligent production research for tool manufacturer in the process of realizing the "Industry 4.0" development goals.According to the needs of information management in the cutting tool production of a certain cutting tool manufacturer, establishing a grinding database to realize the basic grinding data information management and to optimize grinding parameters is proposed.In this paper, an overall functional requirement of the grinding database system is analyzed. The conceptual and logical structures are designed, and the E-R model and logical structure model are established. On the basis of that, relational database tables are established.Based on the analysis of grinding process features in cutting tool production, the variables of machining parameters are chosen. The parameter optimization models for surface and outer circle grinding processes on the five-axis tool grinder are established. The grinding parameter optimization model takes the productivity as the optimization goal, and the grinding wheel life, the surface roughness and other factors as constraints.Taking the end teeth step of flat head cutter grinding for example, orthogonal experiment is designed. And the surface roughness prediction formula is established by using the regression analysis based on the experimental results. Then taking the surface roughness fitting formula as a constraint and the average grinding time of single product as the objective function, the grinding parameter optimization model was constructed and solved by using the genetic algorithms and complex method.Finally, chooses C# as the development language, and SQL Server 2008 as the database management system, based on the C/S network model develops grinding process management database system for the enterprise. An amount of data is imported to test the feasibility of the database system. The grinding database system can achieve the management of basic grinding data as well as the tools’ position state to realize the logistics information initially. It can search all needed tools of every production line for one-time, to facilitate the production operator for productionpreparation. Also it would achieve the recommendation function of grinding parameters to provide reference for the grinding process designer.The application of grinding database can save grinding costs, increase productivity, improve the level of information of the enterprise, thus laying the foundation of achieving the "Industry 4.0" goals for the tool manufacturer.
