| Nowadays, English has played an obviously essential role in the world science and technology information exchanges. Apart from the traditional English speaking countries such as Britain and America, more and more non-English speaking countries such as France, Germany, Japan and Holland have technical journals published in English so as to improve their international competitiveness. Eugene Garfield, as the father of Science Citation Index (SCI), conducted a survey of thousands of major scientific periodical and found that among925,000scientific papers published in1997around the world,95%were written in English. Then what about current situation of English citation in core sports journals in China? This is a widely-concerned issue of sports scholars. According to literature data, there is no research on the situation of English citation in core sports journals up to date. Therefore, the present study adopted the method of citation analysis and conducted statistical sampling and analysis of five kinds of English citations in core sports journals in order to understand the current academic quality and academic level of Chinese core sports journals and find the disparity between the international top sports academic journals and Chinese sports journals. Besides, the study aims to present the current reference and exchange situation of Chinese and English sports’technical information and investigate the information absorbing ability of Chinese sports scholars, hence providing the bibliometrical data for later researchers to study English citation in core sports journals.In this study, the author made a sampling of22,050English citations in five core sports journals during the2008to2012as the object of study. The five core sports journals include China Sport Science, China Sport Science and Technology, Journal ofXi’an Physical Education University, Journal of Shanghai University of Sport and Journal of Tianjin University of Sport. All the samples were collected from the CNKI (www.cnki.net); they were analyzed in four aspects:the current situation of citation quantity, the current situation of time distribution, the current distribution situation of carrier type and the current distribution situation of journal source with multiple methods by using literature, mathematical statistics, logical reasoning, comparative analysis and citation analysis.Through the study, four results could be concluded:(1). The total number of English citation in the five core sports journals is22,050; English citation rate is36%; and the number of average citation amounts to5.9. Since2008, all the data are increasing year by year.(2). The maximum citation year is9years; the half-life period of English citation is10.19years; and the price index is24%. From these data, we can draw the conclusions:sports scholars adopt the English citation with a long time of use and they refer to relatively obsolete literature, hence resulting in low degree of novelty in their thesis. However, the yearly increasing price index could give us a hint that sports researchers are paying more and more attention to the latest sports science and technology information.(3). There are diverse carrier types of English citation, among which journals account for84%.(4). There are15kinds of highly cited English journals in China Sport Science, which have strong representativeness and concentration. Besides, the journal source has a higher degree of subject openness and academic quality. |
